Immigration: + 50,000 Chinese expected in 2018

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

The good new is that you can post on here and complain about the mass immigration into Cambodia with impunity. Try doing that in the uk regarding our immigration policy you get called a racist, a facist and a nazi, they even have got a new law in place to stop you complaining its called a "hate crime". :stir:

I understand why people think that, but if the alternative is that Cambodia struggles on as a developing country for decades to come, surely foreign investment is a good thing? Would people be complaining as much if the foreign investment was coming from the US or Europe? I doubt it. But then, Cambodia wouldn't allow such high investment from them. They're friends with China. So it boils down to two options. Refuse foreign investment and keep the struggling economy as the status quo, or open your doors to China, who are willing to invest billions which will inevitably create jobs, stimulate the economy and potentially lift thousands out of an otherwise poverty stricken life.

I understand why people are cynical about it, but it's happening anyway so get used to it. It wasn't that long ago that China was a struggling, developing country. They seem to have done alight for themselves (economically speaking) - there's no reason why they can't do the same for Cambodia.
I hear what you say and I'm partially agree BUT what I criticize it's the way it's done. Go in Sihanoukville and you wil see. Expropriation, the cost of life increase, big constructions without respect for the coastline... I know that it is the counterpart of the big real estate investment. But the big NO for me it's that the chinese do not adapt to the cambodian culture, they impose their. They came with their chinese restaurants, chinese shops, chinese casinos, chinese ressorts, chinese workers, etc...in 10 years, Sihanoukville will become an extension of China.
I've stayed there for 3 weeks, maybe expat living there will tell me that it's not as worst as I describe.
Didn't the westerners do the same? They came with their western restaurants, bars and resorts too. In much smaller scale of course as there was much less westerners than chinese now but same thing has happened with them.

Cost of living will decrease probably next year already once first batch of constructions will finish.
Nothing like the same with the timescale and destruction! There was/is going to be massive complex or resort built on the beach where for years were just beach bars and restaurants fitting in with the area. Same with Ream, bloody Wisney? You think this is the same as the westerners did or wanted?.They have changed the face of the place, negatively by destroying the charm and culture of what was before. This was the beach towns next attraction to the beach itself. Most employment from the Chinese projects are for the Chinese where Western places had mostly local. I see no progress with infrastructure in SHV, the roads and services which should have been a priority have been forgotten and crumbled to shit.

Not quite true. It's not difficult to express your concerns about immigration in a mature and educated way. The only people who get called racists, fascists and Nazi's are people who verbalise their arguments using language associated with those groups. Groups who, in turn, are typically associated with hate speech. Hence the 'hate crime' you mention.

I regularly express concern over UK immigration, both online and in real life, and not only have I never been called any of those things you mention, I've never felt any need to be fearful of the law.

All that is called development. It's not going to be quiet small beach town in future. But development is natural.

Not really true. For example 90% of workers at Xihu, Prince Times and Sunshine Bay hotels are locals. That is together almost 1000 new positions. And they get paid more than what Sokha Resort pays. Also many of the construction sites and casinos have lot of locals working too.

Big developments for water and sewage pipes starts next year as well. Though this probably will not be enough for future growth as the design was based on 2017 numbers I believe. But still progress is happening on infrastructure all the time (too slow though, I agree on that).

"not quite true" ? one example, Jack Straw, a labour politician from the left who led the fight from the UK against apartheid in South Africa in the 70s said he would prefer not see a constituent of his who wears a "face covering" , he was roundly criticised and called an "islamaphobe, a made up word to shut down any criticism of islam. There are so many instances of reasonable .people being shouted down I don ,t know where to begin

You're confusing Islam (a specific religion) with immigration (a general term meaning people who go to live in a foreign country).

I was being sarcastic, I know the meaning of both those terms
