27 February 2019, Phnom Penh, Cambodia News: The Cambodian Department of Meteorology has forecast record temperatures for the hot season this year; in April and May, temperatures in some parts of Cambodia may climb to 40-50 degrees Celsius or 122 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature reaches 50 degrees celsius, this year will be the hottest ever recorded. The last severe hot season in Cambodia occurred in 2016, when many animals died and crops failed.

The Ministry of Rural Development has issued guidelines for the maintenance of water and water conservation in conditions of extreme heat, and many areas are expected to experience drought.
1- Check the pond well and find an immediate solution when the wells are damaged and the pond is dry.

2- Educate people living in areas where water is scarce to conserve water for daily use and be economical.

3) Communicate with local authorities, development partners, national and international organizations when people are in need of water .

4) Report conditions to the ministry if there is a need for emergency measures.

They are forecasting 2 months ahead? Who told them, the holy bulls? And I thought temperatures above 40 degrees were fairly normal in April. Couple of years ago temperatures went above 40 pretty much every day in April, at least in Temple Town.

5) Stop chopping trees down

Banteay Meanchey, Cambodia News: Acute water shortages in Banteay Meanchey have already been reported this year: Ang Trapeang Thmor Lake is drying up, affecting hundreds of protected species in the lake area. It is estimated that it would be necessary to bring 1 million cubic meters of water from Oddar Meanchey province to refill the lake enough to preserve the habitat for wildlife. Ang Trapeang Thmor is approximately 10 kilometers in length in the rainy season, with a surface of nearly 2 million cubic feet.

Many species of protected birds have made the lake their home, and Mr Yim Samnang, a Phnom Seng District Governor, said that Ang Trapeang Thmor has been dry for more than a week, causing fears that the area's wildlife face death if there is no water to refill the lake's central core.
The principal reason given for this year's acute water shortage is the low rainfall, but the increased amount of water taken from the lake to irrigate local rice paddies is also a factor.

But, After being in Cambodia for nearly ten years I notice the wells run dry sooner every year. A few years ago digging a few more meters would help, but now most have literally hit rock bottom and the wells run dry early April.

Water Resources Ministry seeks more research funds
The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has called on the National Assembly to provide more research funds in order to address increasing temperatures in the Kingdom.

According to the National Assembly website, the call was made during a meeting with the parliamentary body yesterday to discuss the outcome of past work and the challenges ahead.

Minister Lim Kean Hor, who presided the meeting, said the ministry has clear action plans to implement its reservoir strategy, tackle water resources management, conduct weather forecasts, and provide disaster relief, among others.
According to the website, Mr Kean Hor said his ministry will need a budget increase for its research initiatives.

I blame the Japanese for this lack of water. If they had given money for more research funds, this drought would never have happened.

I noticed the wind direction changed a few weeks ago. The breeze has been coming through my place from the north, but has switched to come from the south now, so the temperatures will probably start to climb soon.

Hot weekend : It's hotting up with a general peak in temperatures forecast for the middle of March, with temperatures predicted to rise to around 40 degrees over the weekend of 15,16,17 March in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Don't forget to drink plenty of liquids.

Canal dug to fill reservoir

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology along with Banteay Meanchey provincial officials have completed a man-made canal linking the Ang Trapeang Thmor reservoir to the Sreng river in Oddar Meanchey province.

Banteay Meanchey provincial Governor Suon Bava yesterday said the canal is about 11 kilometres long and the water in the reservoir will be used to help alleviate shortages during the dry season.

“This reservoir is very important to residents and animals,” Mr Bava said. “Now they can save some water.”
