Hot News

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

What's this ??? Breaking news ? Cops stopping a car in PP ?
I saw this happen in SV at least 2 weeks ago - they even stopped 3 cars in a row that ran red lights. I was quite shocked, but never thought to report this. I will take a photo next time. Easy, because they are always in the same place.

fuck, this law doesnt benefit anyone, people moan about the coppers in SHV, yeah theyre annoying but in 3 years theyve only taken 5000r and $2 off me, wear a helmet, keep your lights off in the day, dont run red lights and have a license/drivers permit and you dont have any problems, but now if on the odd chance you forget your going to get stung with a much bigger fine and have to fuck about paying a ticket, thats more annoying than a copper pulling you over, flashing your permit then going on your way, after 5.30pm the coppers go home and you can do what the fuck you want anyway...

as gavin mac said all the coppers will be doing now is taking bribes instead of writing you out a ticket (which is kind of what they was doing anyway! but now the bribes will be bigger because the fines are bigger)

JL : We don't even know what the law is going to be yet; and apparently the cops and the authorities don't know either. They don't have anything in place for the public to pay official fines directly to police administration. The situation is ever so slightly confused. Haha TIC

You must have a helmet, but the quality is probably shit and totally useless in case of an accident. Things get announced, then they get changed, then they get changed again - and then who knows ? Usually the easiest system wins out. If it gets too crazy, just ask for a receipt. - and don't forget to :D

... Mr. Sar Kheng also told the audience that the Interior Ministry would forbid traffic police from collecting fines directly on the street when the new traffic law is implemented next month.

Instead, the minister said, traffic officers at roadside checkpoints would only be allowed to issue tickets, which offending drivers would need to pay at a different location.

“I have banned traffic police from taking money directly at the place,” Mr. Kheng said. “They can just issue a ticket to the vehicle owner…and point them to pay at a nearby police post.”...
.
So, no change then. That's exactly what they were supposed to have been doing as far back as I can remember. But how will they enforce it? Surely the police will just try and take a larger amount of cash than they do now, rather than doing all the paperwork.

I expect a think tank was wondering how it could raise the salary of traffic police without any cash leaving their own pockets (national budget). So Cambodia.

plus as also someone else said, how can they enforce the tickets if theres so many bikes going round with no numberplates, unless they personally escort you to the ticket booth

They were talking about employing a lot more traffic police. If that comes off it won't be good. I know where they hang out now, that may change and make it harder to find new consistent routes.
I expect it could be another 2 week purge and then die down. The higher fine and greater chance of it will probably remain though.

Enforcement and prosecution of corruption is the key to a safer road. The key to Cambodia...

Excellent. Can't wait to see how this works out.
The third to senventh or so paragraphs are far more interesting IMO. Ticket a high ranking minister, get a promotion, and in betwen then what...? Get runover or shot a couple minutes later by said high ranking official!
Basically they're still working out how the extra loot is gonna be split, after the measly 5% or so that makes it into gov coffers!

yeah same here where i live is nicely situated in the area between snooky bar and sunday guesthouse, so i can avoid most of the police by sticking to the back roads, it wont really effect me that much anyway as in the day time if i know theres a chance of me going past police (golden lion roundabout, the road going to-and the 2 main spots in downtown) ill wack my helmet on, make sure lights are off and make sure i have my license on me, so whether they pull me or not they aint getting no fine from me regardless how much the fine is, the only thing that would do me in is if they start having traffic police around once the sun goes down, now that would cause me problems lol
the only people its really going to pinch are the tourists and the thickpats

hopefully it wont even reach Shitsville
