I agree that reading GM's comments on such topics is fascinating as he really knows what he's talking about. His expertise shines and it makes for a good read (as opposed to his personal relationship advice threads, which highlight his cluelessness in other areas).

Stupidly (that's the theme here) he had those conversations with his fixer from jail on a recorded line.
Agreed, amazing insight you uncover on these cases!

Anchorage man sentenced to 18 years for attempted child exploitation
Anchorage man sentenced to 18 years for attempted child exploitation
ANCHORAGE - The former owner of youth hostel has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for attempted sexual exploitation of children and attempted foreign travel for illicit sexual conduct.
Federal prosecutors accused Jason Jayavarman, 45, of arranging and traveling to Cambodia multiple times on child sex tourism trips for himself and others.
He was convicted in March 2015.
Prosecutors at Jayavarman's trial presented evidence that he made 12 trips to Cambodia before his arrest in 2013 and made videos of himself engaging in sexual acts with a person he believed was a child.
An undercover FBI agent collected evidence indicating Jayavarman planned another trip for himself and others and explained to a potential traveler how to groom a child for sex and avoid arrest.
Jayavarman owned Jason's International Youth Hostel in Midtown Anchorage. At the time of his arrest workers were stunned by the allegations against their boss.
"I was shocked actually, he does not seem like that kind of person at all," Cree Biggs, manager at Jason's International Youth Hostel, told KTUU at the time.
According to Biggs, Jayavarman occasionally spoke about growing up in Cambodia but never showed any signs of questionable behavior.
Biggs also said he and Jayavarman had conversations about past girlfriends, but they were all adults.
According to the criminal complaint against him, Jayavarman discussed his previous trips to Cambodia for the purpose of having sex with children with an undercover FBI agent. Jayavarman told the agent that he videotaped and took still images of a child engaged in sexual acts with him at least once during a trip to Cambodia before bringing the video back to Anchorage.
The document also says Jayavarman told the agent the girls he abuses in Cambodia are from Vietnam.

I haven't bothered to read the case file, but did they put an undercover FBI agent on him solely due to his number of times visiting SE Asia?
If they did, it sounds like government overreach. I don't care about perverts being caught, but the idea that travel to a place that isn't a warzone like Syria can mark you down for heavy government surveillance is 1984-esque.
