Girl steals jewellery because "boyfriend too poor".
A totally pathetic love story from OIC :
Love Blinds Dowry Thief
Police have arrested a love-struck teenager who they say confessed to stealing a platinum necklace and bracelet because her boyfriend could not afford a dowry.
Sar Sophy, 19, pretended to buy the items from a jewelry shop in Koh Thom market and tried to ride away on her motorbike as she went to fetch the money.
A report posted by provincial police on Facebook said Ms. Sophy rode alone to the market.
The report said the victim fitted the suspect with the items and asked to be paid.
Ms. Sophy walked towards the motorbike and pretended to unlock the seat to take the money out.
But instead she tried to ride away, only to be stopped by bystanders after the victim shouted for help.
District police said her motive was that her boyfriend did not have enough money for a dowry to give her parents.
“According to the confession from the girl, she stole the jewelry because she loved her boyfriend so much,” a police spokesman said.
“However, her parents demanded $5,000 from the boy’s parents, who had only $4,000.
“Because she loved the boy and wanted to get married, she decided to steal the jewelry to give the money to her boyfriend to make up the $5,000. That’s ridiculous,” he said.
He added that the girl was sent to the provincial court yesterday.
Kandal provincial court deputy prosecutor Tep Munin said she had been charged with theft and had been sent to the investigating judge for further questioning.
She faces a jail term of between six months and three years if charged under articles 353 and 356 of the Penal Code. She could be ordered to pay a fine of between 1 million and 6 million riel.

For once I agree with the police, "that's ridiculous."

Surely a "dowry"" comes with the girl - in gold, or a Bajaj scooter or a color TV (the #1 reason for females being aborted in India by
families to poor to afford a dowry) and a bride-price (in cattle in rural Kenya) is paid by the groom to the bride's parents.
The two customs are totally opposed to one another.
