Gino, Belgian, Owner of Bundy Bar Busted for Overstaying

No, it's the opposite, Cambodia doesn't want foreigners to become Cambodian Citizens, unless they're filthy rich.prahkeitouj wrote:Oh... I guess barang don't want to get Cambodian citizen.
The Law on Nationality states that foreigners legally married to a Cambodian citizen for 3 years can "demand" citizenship, but I highly doubt that it is as simple as that...if one even knew how to go about the process, it would no doubt cost thousands of dollars.

Why didn't Polonsky get citizenship? Wouldn't that have prevented his deportation?

Unlikely, Interpol issued a red notice for Polonsky.Cam Nivag wrote:Why didn't Polonsky get citizenship? Wouldn't that have prevented his deportation?

The majority of westerners that became citizens still need a visa... That is if you want to use your original passport to travel abroad. Visa K aren't available for us...

I think getting citizenship in developed countries is much easier. For example, my aunt married to a Cambodian-Australian. After having lived there for three years, she applied for citizenship and she got it. She said it is so easy. As she speaks and writes really good English, so the only thing she needs is to learn more about Australian and Culture.
Has anyone here gained Cambodian citizenship ?

I can't think of a single good reason to obtain Cambodian citizenship if you're a Western national. The whole "no visa" thing is a terrible reason to take up nationality in a country which could draft you into its army in a time of war and let's be fair about this - S E Asia is almost certainly due a good war and that will probably happen just about the time that China finally annexes the whole of the South China Sea. There are no rights or privileges of Cambodian citizenship which are worth having (no health service, no education entitlement, nothing).Samouth wrote:I think getting citizenship in developed countries is much easier. Actually, I lie - there is one reason to secure Cambodian citizenship; if you want to surrender your own citizenship and hide in Cambodia for the rest of your life because there's an arrest warrant out there somewhere with your name on it.

TBH, i am not really happy having khmer citizenship as to the fact that i can't really go just anywhere in the world which is really sad.

It reminds me of an old joke....
Q. What's the difference between Australia and yogurt?
A. Yogurt has developed it's own culture.
I'm going to give citizenship a go in 18 months when I qualify legally, interesting to see the quote, but the village chief is a grandfather.
