That's awful that he's being prosecuted. If all he did was enable the man to choose the terms of his own departure, I see no issue. Absolutely pathetic, but certainly not uniquely Cambodian. All over the world people seem to hold the belief that you don't own your body.

What a horrible situation
Once you've read the dictionary, every other book is just a remix.

I don't have a problem with this. Apparently, it's a crime to possess a loaded handgun in Cambodia. It doesn't matter if you think you had a good reason to possess/use it. Even if you shoot a burglar or you're defending yourself, or you're giving it to a sick person to kill himself, it's illegal to have it.
NFL player Plaxico Burress was prosecuted for shooting himself in the leg at a nightclub in New York City.
This is something the dying German should have foreseen before roping his family into his desire to kill himself in such a spectacular fashion.

Just because it is illegal doesn't mean you can't feel sorry for the guy. Why is morality so often conflated with legality?

The above quote from the article makes it clear that it's possible he legally owned it.
If it were always "a crime to possess a loaded handgun in Cambodia" then they wouldn't have to say "it is not know if Puthivong had a legal right to own a gun."
Either way, Buth Reaksmey Kongkea has a lousy proof reader or needs to get one. ("It is not know"?)

Well, I'm not saying that people shouldn't feel sorry for the guy with cancer or for the guy who lost his brother.MekongMouse wrote:Just because it is illegal doesn't mean you can't feel sorry for the guy. Why is morality so often conflated with legality?
I was challenging your contention that it was awful and pathetic that he was being prosecuted. I think it's appropriate to prosecute people who break the law, regardless of whether police feel sorry for them.

Re: German Doctor Kills Himself with Pistol in Sen Sok Hospi
The part I think is pathetic is that it is illegal to kill one's self to begin with.
Considering the sloppiness with which cambodian laws are enforced, I don't see why it matters if the courts choose not to prosecute. Even in developed countries with real judicial systems, there is discretion allowed in both enforcement of prosecution.
This isn't one of those cases where what he did was obviously considered a big deal to the government (like smuggling meth, for example). In a country where the laws on the books so rarely count for anything, why is this being made a big deal of? Could it be money?

Updated from Kampucheathmey News
Puthivong said, it was not his pistol. He just brought it to him (victim) following his order. He also added that he didn't know where did his brother in law get the pistol from. According to this update News, Mr Puthivong is unemployed, so it is clear that he doesn't have legal right to own a gun.
As a result, the police didn't accuse or suspect that he was the murderer. The police concluded that the victim shot himself. However, police still arrested Mr Puthivong in the accuse of bringing the pistol to the victim which led this incident to happen.

???Mr Puthivong is unemployed, so it is clear that he doesn't have legal right to own a gun.
Is this actually part of the law on guns here?

In Cambodia, if you are just an ordinary people, you are not allow to own a gun unless you are a police officer, army or governor's bodyguard.MekongMouse wrote:???Mr Puthivong is unemployed, so it is clear that he doesn't have legal right to own a gun.
