Cambodia buys power generator from Finland
Thou Vireak | Publication date 05 July 2019 | 09:11 ICT

Cambodia has officially signed an agreement to buy a power generator from Finland, according to Prime Minister HE’s official Facebook page.

The Cambodian government approved the purchase of the 200MW power generator from Finland for $175 million, with it set to further bolster Phnom Penh’s power supply.

Cambodia last month also agreed in principle to purchase a 200MW generator from Germany for $180 million.

The deal was signed in a meeting with Finnish Minister for Development, Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari on Wednesday, following the World Trade Organisation’s annual review meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.

Both generators will be installed at a new $380 million oil and liquefied natural gas power plant in Koh Reah commune in Kandal province’s Lvea Em district.

Cambodia’s state-run electricity supplier Electricite du Cambodge (EdC) signed an agreement with two Chinese companies last month to build the new facility.

A 100MW Tesla lithium ion battery costs $US63 million.
The idea that seeing the world is going from place to place to look at obvious things is an illusion natural to dull minds.

Why don't they just buy some electricity from the nearby "Battery of Southeast Asia"?

I remember that the government complained about the lack of water in Mekong.

and now what?
water in Mekong is more than normal, and electricity is cut off.

They may have complained but it wasn't about the Mekong, we don't have any dams on it.

Cambodia electricity authority “in a race” to prevent 2020 cuts

By John Le Fevre on August 9, 2019
The head of Electricite Du Cambodge (EdC) said yesterday (Aug 8th) that the utility is in “a race against time and a race against nature” to get two new generators installed and commissioned ahead of the next dry season if power cuts similar to earlier this year are to be avoided.

EdC director-general Keo Rottanak said that contracts for the two 200 megawatts (MW) power plants ordered last month have a completion period of between 10 and 12 months, “but with construction commencing in the wet season it slows things down”, adding that June or July are more realistic.

The two power plants, one from Germany’s Man Group and the other from Finnish firm Wartsila are expected to provide a buffer against Cambodia’s rapidly growing demand for electricity, which between March and June this year experienced a shortfall in generating capacity of some 400 MW.

The unexpected shortage was a result of drought, Cambodia’s predominantly hydro based power generating systems left without sufficient water to turn the turbines.

so they won't be operating next year until after the problematic hot-dry period has passed?
