Seems a 18 year old Khmer girl tragically died in the fire (staff). She was upstairs ironing table cloths (?) When the fire broke out in the kitchen..

Phnom Penh: The Indian Restaurant SHER-E-PUNJAB caught fire due to a gas explosion at 9:30 am, on May 8, on street 130, Sangkat Phsar Kandal1, Khan Don Penh, Phnom Penh. 4 people were injured in the blast: 1 Indian man, 1 Nepalese man and 2 Cambodians( including 1 woman).

The Indian restaurant opened normally at 9 am this morning, but after half an hour there was smoke in the restaurant, and when they saw this, the local people tried to put out the fire, but without success. The staff were inside, and the firefighters had to break open the glass door to help them escape. Six fire trucks were called to the scene and the fire was extinguished at 10am.

That's tragic. Most shophouses here are fire-traps. The windows are always barred and doors on stairwells are often locked so there's no escape much of the time. It's a well-established restaurant so I wonder what exactly caused this?

One of our most favourite places to eat on Riverside, really sorry to hear this. The staff are great fun, horrible to see them in pain.

The fire department came twice. Once in the morning after the blast and then again later after reports of the fire restarting. The 2nd time I noticed guys going in with breathing equipment and discovered the girl upstairs.

Begs the question, why didn't they check the upper floor for other people the first time? Especially given the toxic fumes and the risk of asphyxiation.

Also, the fire hoses all had leaks in them and the best they could do was wrap cloth around them..doesn't inspire confidence in a big blaze.

Reports the firemen broke the front glass doors to let the 4 workers out I think is incorrect. Rather, the blast blew the front doors out judging by the amount of broken glass projected out on the road. Pictures of the injured are in st 5 so I suspect they got out the back door of the restaurant into the laneway.

are they saying they were locked in?

That's the inference but I don't believe
