Hard to know which way the garment factory situation is going. I guess with salary's increasing this year there will be a few more closing.

I took a walk along Veng Sreng Blvd yesterday and noticed there are still lots of signs up with factories looking for workers.

Confidence is so strong that many new buildings are going up , specially designed to house factory workers.

You think we should talk to all those workers that we have sent to Thailand, Malaysia and Arab countries to come home .

I think they have a lot of vacancies because people leave when the (mainly) Chinese owners do not pay them, which is apparently a depressingly common occurence

If in doubt don't use an apostrophe. If they're getting paid the same as a Vietnamese worker then there are going to be a lot of empty factories. From what I see minimum wage in Vn is now $168.

The cleaner in my apartment block now gets $150 a month, which also seems to be the going rate for waitresses in tourist restaurants and girlie bars.
add tips and girlie drinks and its near $200 for 8 hour shift 6 days a week at a certain restaurant on riverside, and $350+ for a hostess who keeps her legs crossed at certain ladybars on 136. I am told on piece work a good worker can get $300 + in some factories with bonus and ovetime.
Just to pu that into perspective in 2014 I was offered the wonderful rate of £860 a month in the uk in a 24 hour call centre for 40 hour week. Knock of tax and NI that is about £650. Rent £200. Cigarettes £12 a packet, beer £3 a pint not to mention car insurance , road tax, mobile charges etc etc. . Considering the cost of living in Cambodia I reckon a lot of Khmer are better off than low paid workers in the west now.

Garment factory shutters, leaving hundreds unpaid

Garment workers at the Benoh Apparel factory in the capital’s Meanchey district returned to work this week after a two-month suspension to find the building abandoned, prompting a protest demanding compensation from the government.

Some 200 workers gathered outside the factory as union leaders took turns shouting into a loudspeaker, watched by small number of armed police.

Benoh Apparel suspended activities under controversial circumstances in November, telling 600 of its 1,000-member staff to return in January and only paying workers $30 per month during that time, well under the then-minimum wage of $153.

Mon Makara, a 31-year-old garment worker who was at Benoh Apparel for 10 years, worried that the workers will never see compensation, despite meeting with a representative from the Ministry of Labour.

“The same Ministry of Labour representative came to meetings at the factory the last two months and claimed that he guaranteed the employer would not run away, and persuaded the workers to accept the offer of $30 a month,” she said...

And that company is alleged to be linked to H&M. Funny thing about H&M. They have protests at their suppliers and twice they have flown out to allegedly ask the government to enforce factory standards and after they leave the protests have been brutally dispersed. DONT BUY FROM H&M they are worse than the factory owners they employ

Hmm, slight exaggeration, personal allowance in 2014/15 was £10,000pa. Your £860 wage is £10,320, so you were liable only for tax & NI on £320pa. Cool story, Bro.
