Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Frenchman Was Hit By a Mob of Tuk Tuk Drivers

Phnom Penh: A Frenchman and his khmer girlfriend were traveling on a Tuk Tuk to visit the park in front of Nagaworld. It wasn't sure when they got of the Tuk Tuk whether the Frenchman didn't give enough money or wasn't verbally kind to the tuk tuk. So, the fight erupted from there, the Tuk Tuk driver started hitting the Frenchman later a few other Tuk Tuk drivers jumped him to help the Tuk Tuk driver who was already fighting with the Frenchman.

The fight took place around 9:00 pm on 20 August 2016 in front of Nagaworld located in Chamkarmon district, Phnom Penh city.

Witness said, the unidentified Frenchman and his khmer girlfriend were taking a Tuk Tuk together and stopped in front of the park right before the Nagaworld. Then when, they got off the Tuk Tuk , the Frenchman was seen talking to the Tuk Tuk driver. It wasn't sure when they got of the Tuk Tuk whether the Frenchman didn't give enough money or wasn't verbally kind to the tuk tuk. So, the Tuk Tuk driver fought the Frenchman injuring his head and face with the help from his peers. Later, both Tuk Tuk drivers and his girlfriend fled the scene.

My guess:

Sihanoukville, drunken Frenchie, racial slur, tuktuk beat-down

So a mob of tuktuk drivers beats up a tourist and the one thing the Khmer media is sure of is that the tourist somehow provoked the beating, but just not sure exactly how he provoked it.

CEOCambodiaNews' translation displays a slight bias IMO. The Hang Meas article says មិនដឹងនិយាយអី - "(it is) not known what was said" it certainly doesn't say anything about being "verbally unkind" or swearing or even if the passenger and tuk-tuk driver were 'arguing'..."it just says it is not known what was said".

I actually get the impression from the article that the journalist/author thinks the French guy was ambushed, that is that the passenger was "suddenly" attacked by 2-3 friends of the tuk-tuk driver (and possibly also friends if the Khmer 'girlfriend'' who also fled the scene) who were waiting/are stationed at the park and who very quickly joined in the fight.

Yes, I've noticed that here. Thanks for clearing up what the press actually said. Be interesting to know what really happened. Tuktuk drivers physically attacking tourists, especially in front of a mainstream upscale place like Naga, does not speak well of this place and the direction things are going.

^They'll be a Hang Meas TV news piece about it tomorrow in all likelihood. If I happen upon it I'll post the YouTube clip.
