Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. Frenchman Commits Suicide by Shooting Himself in Guesthouse

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

A 47 year old Frenchman was found dead in Khmer Stay, a backpacker friendly guesthouse in Phnom Penh, with a gunshot wound to the head in an apparent suicide.

He hadn't come down from his room in a couple days and the staff started to notice a terrible smell coming from his room, so they opened his door to find him dead and lying on the bed with a K54 Chinese pistol next to him.

Authorities were surprised to find him dead like this because they didn't think foreigners have guns.

The K54 pistol (known as black star pistols) is a Chinese-made firearm that was used by the Vietnamese in the Vietnam War, and is a clone of the Tokarev pistol, a Russian pistol. They are very common guns here in Cambodia.

The local news had given his name as "CHELKOFF CYRIL VICTOR."

The pistol looks a little rough, probably a tuk-tuk/street buy. I bought a brand new one of those about 20 years ago in America ($100. with holster/belt) and have it in my collection in the US. Its one of the best shooting semi-auto pistols I've got. Its in 7.62x25, a necked down cartridge that is also used in machine guns/machine pistols. The design is a Russian copy of both the Colt and Browning auto. Being French he probably was trying to figure out which end of the pistol the bullets came out of and pulled the trigger at the same time.

It must be a nice hotel if the guests can fire off handguns without the hotel complaining.

I wonder if it was a standard single shot suicide or a special Cambodian style double head shot suicide.

Wasn't there a '3 in the chest suicide' a few months back - or was that Thailand ?
