French Expat GABRIEL MAZ (Owner of Cherie's Bar) Dies of Heart Failure in Phnom Penh

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Back on topic, RIP...wow, a father/son girly-bar owner combo. I think that's the first I've heard of that.
Shows how much I get out these days!
yeah i only found out last year when i tried parking my bike outside Loco and then going to one of Wills other bars and the street security guys kicking off with me then they told me its not one of his bars anymore or something, so i moved it to the bar next door :unknown:

Really, shocked and saddened to see this. They don't let me out much anymore but when i could escape and did fancy some good drinks and good company ... Cherie's was my go to place. Spent a fair amount of time chatting with Gabriel he had a unique vision of how to manage a hostess bar; putting an emphasis on quality of experience, and customer service. Always made sure to learn and remember customer names, always greeted customers -- quick to shoot a free drink (even if drinking top shelf). A very likable person who always came across as sincere. One of the few places that served proper sipping whiskeys (Like Blantons Gold ánd Woodford Reserve Special Reserve Bourbon) and a wide selection of higher end Rums into which Gabriel and I would sometimes sample. It was as much whisky bar as girly bar. If you fancied female company it was available, if not there was always good conversation among the bar patrons, and the atmosphere was always a step above the draft Angkor crowd that dominates most hostess bars..

Far too young and a genuinely decent bloke.

As the Irish say --- May you be safely in heaven before the devil knows you are dead.

Cheers,

RD
