FREEDOM PSRK TO BE MOVED

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

FREEDOM PSRK TO BE MOVED

Read into it what you will. I suspect they're saying that freedom and prime real estate are mutually incompatible.

I read this:
“The new area must be located at a place where there are a lot of people and people coming to witness, and a location where there are a lot of people who want to express themselves.”

He said the current location of Freedom Park is too small for the number of citizens who regularly use it to express their ideas...
:dm: That sounds totally believable. :thumb:

Maybe AM, but I see it in the same light as the NCRP party radio station which was given a green light, then turned down, then OKed, then told that a new location had to be found. The beat goes on...

I think it is more about moving a place known for congregation outside of the city.

They don't want a lot of people at that location and it's hard to control because of the lack of space. They will create a space that will be more manageable and for an easier counter offensive to happen if it is ever needed.

Kind of funny. When the government first created Freedom Park it was considered an affront to freedom of speech, restricting that freedom to one area, and away from the Palace/Ministry/NA of Justice area wher protests used to occur. Some called it the Freedom Corral. And I think that was the government's intent at the time. But in the end it had the opposite effect, providing a focal point and staging area for protest and dissent. See 2013. Seems they have realized their mistake.i imagine they will create a new Freedom Park somewhere in some swampland far from anywhere.

Oh yeah, I agree with that; I just thought that they could do better than "FP will be moved because there's not enough room for all the protesters". Lol.

Why not a semi-believable excuse like :" FP will be closed "temporarily" for the construction of a municipal swimming pool in the park for PP residents" ? Which could take as long as it takes, all the while promising that the park will reopen "soon".
And in the meantime, feel free to go protest on the Kompong Cham airstrip ...

I'm not sure if the park is too small or if voiced notions of democracy are too big.

Yeah, also a place way out in the boonies. They've sold out the land most ministries used to be on and moved them outside the city center as well. Doesn't surprise me if they'd fill in that area with buildings or a parking lot. Kills two birds with one stone: gets rid of a central location for prospectors (Royal Palace to Freedom Park, Freedom Park to the outskirts of town), makes some guys big cash by selling off state land.
