A Nigerian who described himself as a footballer was yesterday sentenced in Phnom Penh Municipal Court to eight years’ jail and fined 40 million riel (about $10,000) for drug trafficking. Francis Ihenwe Oderah, 30, had 100 grams of meth in his possession when he was arrested in Phnom Penh’s Choam Chao commune in January.

During his hearing on June 7, the accused admitted having acted as a delivery man, but said he was not a dealer. It also was revealed that the meth he was carrying had a purity of about 72 per cent.

Oderah will carry out his sentence in Prey Sar prison, where he has been detained since his arrest in January...

It is said that the very disagreeable "Bangkok Hilton" accommodates enough Nigerians for them to have
an all-Nigerian soccer team, without needing to include Gambians, Ghanaians and so on.

Is this now true of Prey Sar? Is there even a soccer league there?

Do they make the meth in Cambodia or Nigeria? I'm not understanding the Nigerian connection.

Most methamphetamines here are made in Myanmar and sometimes Laos or even China. "China White" heroin comes from the same areas. The Nigerian connection is that a lot of drugs flow through West Africa, and some of their nationals get involved in the international trade. Cambodia isn't a drug producer of any significance, but major amounts of narcotics flow through the country.

Do these Nigerians find work at the port in SHV? I'm not sure why there are so many itinerant Nigerians in PP (and across Thailand for that matter) when the act of transporting across the country to the port and border crossings (presumably) could be done much less suspiciously with locals. Are they arranging the transport of the drugs to West Africa for distribution elsewhere?

I can't say I know a whole lot about it other than what I garner from news reports. These gangs smuggle cocaine from Africa, and likely trade it for heroin here. They employ local drug-mules and obviously set up connections with local mafia too. It's a huge business and these guys are tough as fuck and won't stop at much.
