Four Children Aged 10-14 Drown in a Pond, Kampong Cham

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Another sad tale of Cambodian children who drown because they do not know how to swim. RIP.

42 mins ago - BREAKING NEWS
Four children drown in Kampong Cham
Four children drowned in a pond in Kampong Cham province’s Stung Trang district on Saturday.

Colonel Khorn Khoeun, Arak Tnort commune police chief, today said six children went for a walk to a cashew farm located about two kilometres from their homes when they spotted a pond on the way.

“They saw the pond near the cashew farm and went for a swim, but four of the six children got into difficulties and the other two ran to the village to tell their parents,” Col Khoeun said. “Because of the long distance [to reach their homes], the children already passed away when their parents arrived at the scene.”

Col Khoeun noted that two of the children who died were siblings.
The victims were identified as Chun Lita, 12, Chun Chou, 10, Reth Noy, 13, and Hang Hy, 11.

A lot of Cambodians drown. In the villages, I am often told about people who have drowned. Most dont make the news.
## I thought I knew all the answers, but they changed all the questions. ##

Maybe the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport could introduce compulsory swimming lessons into the school curriculum.

That would be a good start to tackling the problem. When I ask parents about swimming lessons for the kids, most of them (parents) don't really know how to swim or even stay afloat.

According to http://swimsafe.org/drowning/drowning-data/ 6 children die every day from drowning in Cambodia. Some interesting observations on under 5 deaths.
Toddlers, those aged 1-4, make up nearly one half of all child drownings in Asia. Toddlers are more likely to wander off while their mothers are busy with household chores. Mothers may not be used to their children being able to walk, or think others are watching them. Another key risk factor is that toddlers can drown in a bucket or any other small amount of unattended water.

For children older than five, those who can swim rarely drown. However, many can’t swim and young school aged children, those aged 5-9, account for more than one out of three child drownings in Asia. In Bangladesh, drowning was the single leading cause of death for children this age — and 86 per cent of children older than 4 who drowned couldn’t swim. Swimming becomes more critical for children this age, who are more adventurous. Barriers or supervision alone won’t stop them exploring water.

Drownings drop off by more than 50 per cent for children aged 10 –14, with an estimated 4,500 drownings per year, and again for late adolescents, 15-17, with 300 drownings. Children this age are more likely to be able to swim, or to be swimming with children who can.

Almost 90% of the 1-4 year old age group drowned within 100 metres of their home and 47% drowned within 10 metres of their home.
The 6 deaths per day is quoted by a few NGOs who are working in rural Cambodia to reduce this figure.
Also it lists Vietnam as having 32 children drown every day. That is an absolutely shocking figure for a country like Vietnam.

Great idea bit how many schools do you know that have pools? Or any public pool for that matter?

Sounds like you work for the ministry, hanno.

Let's not bother looking for solutions.

What a bullshit reply. For your information, I offer swimming classes at my hotel here in Sa Pa for local children. We have 40 - 50 kids every day. But I do not see every hotel doing that....

And that is a great reply hanno. Hats off to you for your efforts in offering swimming classes.

Surely, there is a simple solution for rural Khmer kids that doesn't need a huge budget to build swimming pools everywhere. There are lakes, dams, rivers. There must be a way.

There’s another approach. Floating lessons, much simpler and quicker than swimming lessons.
