Foster + Partners recently unveiled renderings of Techo Takhmao International Airport in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The airport will anchor a future airport city about 12 miles from Phnom Penh’s city center. Upon completion, it will be the ninth largest airport in the world.

Techo Takhmao International Airport will encompass 280 million square feet, built in phases. The first will allow the airport to accommodate up to 13 million passengers per year. Officials are aiming for the airport to be class 4F, the highest class for airports. Foster + Partners beat out other notable firms in an international competition to design the project that Cambodian officials say is essential for better connecting Phnom Penh to the global marketplace.....

More text and some lovely pictures in the article. Trustworthy link.

You get a different class of marketing BS with the best firms:

“Inspired by Cambodia’s history and built heritage, the terminal’s design stands as a modern embodiment of Cambodian culture,” said Nikolai Malsch, a senior partner at Foster + Partners. “The Terminal roof is an expression of lightness and inherent modularity, serving as a symbolic gateway for every traveller’s journey.”

This is what it will look like when the start giving away free flights:

And where are these 13 million passengers going to go in Cambodia?

Allot of people transit, not like everyone who land do so to enter the country.

Would assume that is what they want to become a viable alternative and attract airlines to use the new airport as a transit hub.

Which airlines would they possibly be able to attract to such a new transit hub? That sounds like a pipe dream to me.

With Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong close by it doesn't seem the greatest idea. What edge would this 'Techo' airport have over the other four to seriously compete?

A bit like opening another phone shop selling the same Vivo models as the other bunch of shops next door.

Depicted in renderings like the one above, the verdant city remains hazy on details, but aligns with an emerging trend tethering innovation parks and business centers to airports around the world.

...But the ideas are vibrant and if the ideas fail the foreign press is to blame.

Isn't the transit hub becoming out of date? The Hub & Spoke model is great for the hubs but PP is at the end of a very thin spoke. Who is going to fly from Australia to PP direct and then transit to where? Siem Reap :D
PP is the end of the line.

Travellers want direct flights, that's why the A380 is over and so too is the 747 (which is a crying shame). Quad Jets are dead. A321XLR is where it is going and they can reach any Australian city from PP direct. But nobody is offering such a service. Qantas have 20 A321XLR due for delivery late 2024, we'll see how many land in PP.

There is not enough demand for direct flights from far away major cities, that's why we have to transit and onto little 150 seat flying buses. If there was demand , we would have direct flights to somewhere further then BKK/KL/SIN et al, but there isn't, so we don't. It ain't rocket science.

Building a huge airport 30km in the boonies if fucking stupid and will reduce demand further as people figure out there is a poxy hour-long taxi ride into the city and at great expense.
