American Steven Simonsen Jumps to his Death From 4th Story on Street 136 in Phnom Penh (Next to Spider-Man Bar)

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Hey don't be so harsh.

This Khmer guy was able to successfully talk this troubled tefl jobber off the ledge of a local school.

Albeit, with promises to finally pay him all the months worth of back wages he was due.

Cultural differences, most certainly with this sort of issue, are huge. You can't blame the Khmer fellow anymore than you can blame yourself for not being there. Steven went out on his own terms.

Rest in peace.

I wonder what people like you are even doing here when you hate everyone and everything so much.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

He didn't go out on his own terms if he wasn't going to jump but then tried to get away from someone grabbing at him and fell to his death.

In the video, it appeared to me the 'attempt to grab him' was after he had begun his leap. How effective was that ever gonna be?

Didn't realize you knew me so well to make that comment. Why I'm here is my business, as why you're here is your business.

The way you jump to conclusions makes me wish you don't find yourself on a ledge someday, too.

I don't think Cam gives a shit either way...sometimes he enjoys being a contrarian just for shits and giggles.

I hand't seen the video, that's the problem with this stupid policy of spitting thread between here and the Darknet.

Having looked at the video now, it appears he's sitting on the ledge and then there's screaming while someone is reaching at him from one side and someone else is coming up from behind him. Then he jumps. Certainly it would be classified as suicide, but this may be one of many foreigner deaths in Cambodia that wouldn't have happened if the local cops or business owners weren't totally incompetent.

If they had left him alone instead of forcing the issue he might have just come back inside.

Incompetent at what? Negotiating with a potentially suicidal person? Would you consider yourself competent to do so?

I'm sure if the incident was reversed and no one appeared with the man on the ledge, then you'd be decrying heartless Cambodians.

So what would the correct course of action have been? Just leave him be and quietly stack mattresses around the perimeter of the hotel grounds, whilst hoping for the best?
