Foreigner Caught RED HANDED on CCTV Stealing Motorbike in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Recently it seems you have become disenchanted with Kampuchia explorer. You're finding evil everywhere among the locals and naivete among the expats. How fortunate tha latter are having you guard their backs and how unfortunate the locals are to have their black side revealed.

I think newcomers should be warned about what is really going on. If they are warned, a lot of crime can be prevented.

There are no doubt, some people who have little idea what really goes on.

There are others who dont tell the truth, because they know they will be criticized for it.

You can be most effective in doing positive things when you understand reality.

I frequently am left with the feeling you may be one of them.

Aren't you just in denial after (more than?) 15 years here? :stir:

Nope, that period of time has given me insight to both locals and cape wearing expats.

Warned how? Like you’re going to another country that’s had a dubious past and is just recovering. In the city don’t walk around like you’re home in your own street because, you know, you’re white and probably carrying your iPhone, IPad, money, credit cards, passport, insulin, prescription glasses in your backpack you’ve just casually thrown over your shoulder/thrown on the floor?

Yeah. Good luck with that genius.

A similar scam also occurs with people hiring motorbikes. They either have the lock cylinder modified or a copy of the key. They have somebody steal the motorbike while it is on hire. The hirer has to pay for a replacement motorbike. They make a lot more money doing this than just hiring motorbikes.

A variation of this is: They have somebody switch motorbikes while it is on hire with another one which is the same model and same colour. The hirer often does not know it is another motorbike for some time. When he/she takes it back, they have to pay for a replacement motorbike. If they go to the police, they are likely to be accused of stealing the motorbike.

It does not matter if you believe me or not. However, I suggest anyone buying or hiring a motorbike take precautions.

A brake lock was mentioned previously. One option is to get one of these.

Even better, get a heavy chain with a heavy lock. When you leave the motorbike, lock it to a tree or post. If there is nothing like that to lock it to, lock it through the wheel.

If this additional device was supplied by the seller or hirer, it is not good enough. They may have a copy of the key. Get your own locking device from another source.

A lot of motorbikes are stolen from homes when people go away. If you go away, take your motorbike to the place of another person you can trust. Dont leave it home when you go away, even if you have a strong security gate, and strong doors and locks. People are still likely to break in.

Little theft occurs in places known to have security guards and security cameras.

Some bikes have had the lock cylinder modified so other keys will work. Some motorbike theft is by organized criminal gangs who may have modified the cylinder before selling the bike, so it is easy to steal later.

It seems he knew the key would work. He may have known the lock cylinder had been modified, or may have had a copy of the key.
Well there is another option. An aquaintance of mine had his moto stolen by a girklfriend. It appeared near a bar he drank at so he reposessed it, using his key. do we know for sure the status of this bike theft? could the perp just have been recovering his own property?
