Doesn't say where they actually lost it though ?, was it inside the bus ?

Nobodys stupid enough to put valuables in their checked luggage beneath the bus, completely out of sight surely ?
actually lock it up inside the lugguage in the bus compartment below is the safest, coz nobody can access to it during the bus journey, but hv to make sure that other passengers dont take the wrong lugguage as some passenger might get off in the middle of the journey.
Every time the bus stops to let passengers on/off or toilet/rest stops presents an opportunity for someone, most likely an employee, to rifle through people's baggage in the cargo hold. Most luggage locks are easily opened and it's difficult to lock all zips in a backpack so most don't do it. Leave valuables out of your sight/possession at your own peril.

I worked as an airline luggage handler in my younger days while saving for university. Some employees made little effort to hide their thefts from customer's luggage. It was blatant. Trust no one.

People are nuts... That girl didn't even know WHEN it was taken... She remembers leaving it on top of her stuff and noticed it was gone when she left the bus? If you disrespect your own property that much can you imagine how well she treats other people's property? I sure would never lend anything to them, or rent them a car or even a room.

At least you should know WHEN it happened.
I remember being on a night bus from Vientiane to pakse. The window on the sleeper bus was shattered next to my head making a terrible whistling sound. If I leaned over to fall asleep it cut my arm.
So I kept my little shitty ipod mini playing movies all night watching anything I had downloaded to try and stay awake.
I'm never the kind of person that sleeps on "over night" transit. I'll rest whenever I get to where I'm going.
Eventually I passed out from exhaustion. Maybe for half an hour. Just enough time to arrive as the tuk tuk drivers shook me awake asking where I go? Where I go?
2 minutes later I realized it was gone.
But wtf do you do?
Who ever got it is long gone. That's 50 tuk tuk rides worth of work for the person who needs it more than you.

UPDATE: The bus company has been kind enough to give the backpackers money to compensate them for their loss!

April 4, 2016 Phnom Penh: Virak-Buntham bus company has explained about a couple of foreigners who lost an iphone on their bus on April 2, 2016 at 11:30 am at Poipet to all the people especially the costumers. The company confirmed that, they felt so sorry about this and now they had been currently investing this case to help out to the costumers. After trying their efforts, asking the bus driver for a very detail information and investigating over the safe camera on the bus, there was not anyone estimated to open the curtain in the couple’s room to steal the phone. The company estimates that, the foreign couples should have forgotten their phone somewhere else like the seat where they were waiting for the bus or the bus parked restaurant before taking the bus. The company added that, the case that the bus company's staff had taken the picture of the journalist was true, but there was no any bad purpose since it was just the evidence to record back to Phnom Penh office in order to investigate for a better solution. According to the explanation, Virak-Buntham Express company continued that, there was no any bad intention to hide costumer's possession, but a careful prevention to strange people who fake to be a cheated costumer. However, the company still keeps on their investigation at the hotel where the couple stayed and the bus park restaurant. There should be a remind that, there was also another case of two, male and female foreigners cried after leaving from the Vereak Bontan bus when their iphone6 was stolen.

Why is that letter dated 21 Jan 2016?
Why does that guy have no tatts on his forearm?

Different story?

Yes it is completely different story.

I read the khmer version on VTB facebook page. It posted a lengthy status to deny the accusation and made it clear that its staff didn't steal stuff from those travelers. The picture of a barang getting back phone and money is just a proof that company claimed it is a legitimate company and would always return stuff back to passengers if they forget on the bus.
