Foot and mouth disease outbreak; are sufficient measures taken ?
Interesting news item which gives an insight into Cambodian methods of animal disease control and eradication.
Foot and mouth is highly contagious disease affecting all cloven-hoofed ruminants, such as cattle, sheep, goats, deer. It can be transmitted by infected animals dead or alive, by air, or by people and vehicles. It is usual practice to cull all sick animals, to safely dispose of the carcasses, and to thoroughly disinfect premises, equipment and vehicles that may have been in contact with the virus.

Foot-and-mouth affecting cattle
Pech Sotheary 08 February 2017
Many cattle in Svay Rieng province’s Svay Chrum and Chantrea districts have fallen ill or died from foot-and-mouth and other diseases over the past few weeks, resulting in the launch of a cattle vaccination campaign.
Soun Norng, the deputy police chief of Chantrea district, said yesterday that more than 100 head of cattle in Chantrea and Soursdey communes had been infected by foot-and-mouth disease in the past two to three weeks, including seven that died.
However, he added that most of the sick cattle had recovered after being treated by veterinary officials...
However Sen Sovann, the deputy secretary-general of the Agriculture Ministry and director-general of the animal health and production department, said that foot-and-mouth disease has so far only affected about 20 head of cattle.
He added that an outbreak of foot-and-mouth happened last month and officials took action immediately.
“There was only a bird flu outbreak in Svay Rieng province. Only a small number of cattle have died from foot-and-mouth disease,” he said.
“Officials took action to vaccinate about 20 head of cattle. Now I am pushing for a vaccination campaign across the country.”
Mr. Sovann said officials have always launched a free vaccination campaign from January to April every year to protect cattle from diseases.
However, the vaccination is only given to cattle when an outbreak of the disease occurs because the vaccine is expensive and the government does not have enough money to provide for cattle nationwide.
