It may be flooding in some areas, the water levels in the Mekong this year (the red line) are still way below average (the black line).

Although it's a little bit improving from 4 to about 3 meters below what is normal for this time of year, it's still a 'very dry' wet season (and that will have consequences, esp. for farmers and fishing).

PM tells authorities to prepare for floods
Khouth Sophak Chakrya | Publication date 04 September 2019 | 23:39 ICT
Prime Minister HE has instructed provincial authorities and relevant institutions to take preventative measures and prepare for rescue operations as floods caused by heavy rains take their toll on northern provinces across the Kingdom.

In Stung Treng, provincial hall spokesman Men Kong told The Post on Wednesday that five of the province’s six towns and districts had been inundated due to recent downpours and rising water levels in the Upper Mekong River Basin.

As of Wednesday, Kong said, the Mekong River water level as measured by provincial hydrological stations has risen to 10.90m, 20cm above the emergency level.

“Up to now, Siem Pang is the only district that has not suffered from floods caused by heavy rains and the Mekong flood waters,” he said.

He said many stretches of road in the districts had been submerged, while 20 villages had been inundated.

With water rising up to waist height, the affected villagers will soon be evacuated to higher ground, he said.

“Provincial joint forces are preparing evacuation plans. We are getting tents and mobile toilets ready for 83 locations that are safe from floods,” he said.

Hundreds flee floods in Stung Treng
More than 700 families in Stung Treng province have been evacuated from floods following heavy rains which caused the Mekong river to overflow.

Men Kong, a Provincial Hall spokesman, yesterday said that 3,220 families were hit by floods, including 790 that were evacuated to higher ground.

“Most of the province has been affected by floods, except for Sesan and Siem Pang districts,” he said. “People in those two districts have not yet been evacuated because the river water level has not exceeded the danger level there.”

Mr Kong noted that the water level at the Mekong in the rest of the province had risen to 11.9 metres, which was above the danger level of 10.7 metres.

“We issued an alert to all districts, communes and villages for people to be careful about floods, including through radio and television, in our province. We also provided a hot line number for people to contact the authorities,” he said.

Never fear Katz, there will be good adventure kayaking in Phnom Penh next week.
It takes about 5-7 days for the pulse to reach Phnom Penh when it floods around the Laos border region.
