Heavy Vehicle Traffic Suspended in Preah Vihear
Image
Cambodia News (Preah Vihear Province): On 27 September 2022, the Department of Public Works and Transport of Preah Vihear Province issued a notice dated 26 September 2022, ordering the temporary suspension of all traffic of heavy vehicles on National Road No. 9 in Mlou Prey village, Mlou Prey 1 commune, Cheb district, Preah Vihear province, between km 560 and km 561. The reason for the suspension of traffic is due to the recent exceptioally heavy rainfall, causing flooding in that area that exceeds the emergency level.

The suspension will be in effect from the date of the announcement until further notice, in order to keep roads and bridges from collapsing and to ensure safe traffic.

Mekong River Flooding Alert: Stung Treng, Kratie, Kampong Cham
Image
Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On 29 September 2022, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology issued a notice announcing that the weather situation for the next 3-5 days will change due to the effects of the 16th typhoon "NORU" on the Mekong River basin in Thailand. Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. This phenomenon will cause more rain to fall in the Mekong Basin which will cause the Mekong River to overflow in places in the upper Mekong.

According to the forecast, the water level of the Mekong River will rise in the next 3 to 5 days, especially in the upper part of Cambodia. More particularly the water level will rise to 10 meters in Stung Treng province, 21.00 meters in Kratie province, and 14.30 meters in Kampong Cham province. At the Phnom Penh-Chaktomuk Hydrological Station, the water level may reach 9.40 meters.

The rising river levels have not yet reached the alert level, but it may cause some low-lying areas along the river to flood, and people in the northeast of Cambodia are warned to be prepared for possible floods close to rivers and tributaries of the Mekong.

Stung Treng still on high flood alert
The predicted rising of the Mekong River has put Stung Treng on high alert in case of flooding despite reports that the current flood situation in the country is not as serious.

This morning, the Stung Treng Provincial Administration issued a notification on the readiness to respond and increased high alert for local flooding.

In the letter of the provincial administration, it referenced the notification of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology dated 29 September. The provincial administration stated that the Mekong River will rise.

The Stung Treng Provincial Disaster Management Committee informed local, municipalities, districts, communes, sangkats authorities and the public that the Mekong River is rapidly rising causing Tonle Kong and the San River to rise.

MOWRAM Warns of Possible Floods due to Rising Mekong Water Levels
AKP Phnom Penh, July 31, 2023 --

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM) this morning warned the public of possible floods due to rising Mekong water levels in the next few days, especially in the northern part of the country.

In its new weather forecast, the ministry said to the water level would jump to 7.65 metres in Stung Treng province, 16.70 metres in Kratie province, and 9.90 metres in Kampong Cham province.

MOWRAM explained the phenomenon by the changing weather conditions due to the effects of low pressure system (ITCZ) causing heavy rainfall in the Mekong Basin.

Anyway, it added, the rising water levels are not yet at the alert level, but some lowland areas along the river may be flooded.

MOWRAM thus called on the public to increase their vigilance to avoid any possible danger.

Floods damage homes, rice fields and roads across four provinces
Nearly 5,000 families in four provinces were affected by flooding over the weekend, with some being evacuated to higher grounds.

Heavy rains also disrupted traffic and washed out some portions of the roads in several places.

Soth Kim Kolmony, spokesman for the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), said four provinces were seriously affected by flash floods after torrential rains in Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Koh Kong and Kep.

Rains fell over nearly a week-long period beginning Tuesday through Sunday.

He added that road traffic along National Road 4 in Preah Sihanouk province was suspended at Stung Samraong point in Kampong Seila district. Floodwaters reached heights of 68cm. Nearby, road traffic at Yeay Mao Pich Nil commune along National Road 4 was also suspended.

Kim Kolmony said that in Kampot province, 4,408 families and four schools’ buildings were affected by flash floods.

The districts most severely affected were Kampong Trach, Toek Chhou and Kampot City.

He added that rains in Kampong Speu province hit both Baseth and Phnom Sruoch districts, flooding 13 communes and 37 villages.
