It amazes me that this particular scam, old as Methuselah, still lures in punters. A mix of stupidity and greed?
Re: Five Filipino Card Scammers Under Arrest in Phnom Penh
And still exactly the same guy but now he has a younger sidekick. Went past that dodgy old dude who aproached me in sorya shopping mall years ago in Aeonmall a few months ago. "nice glasses sir" and after I totally ignored him walked on and that younger dude came out of nowhere with the exact same sentence.
At that point they got me slightly confused but could still leave without going to their gambling den.

Police? I had NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. I just heard it happen, I did not know the man and never seen him except out the window when they left the house to go to the bank.Duncan wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2019 12:06 pmbob.fortin wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2019 11:29 amIt's a confidence game. More likely cause you don't wear a '' nice hat ''.
Then you should hand yourself into the police as you were a party to the scam.

Deny. Deny. Deny. The first sign of someone being guilty as hell. Should get 10 years in Prey Sar on rice and water .
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Re: Five Filipino Card Scammers Under Arrest in Phnom Penh
At the risk of some abuse for being stupid I will confess that i had a brush with this scam 5 years ago in Bangkok. Same general formula that is used here and elsewhere.
In my case the icebreaker related to my large water bottle.
My first time in Bangkok, I was walking down Phra Sumen n(about 5 minutes from Khao san), carrying an empty 5 litre bottle to refill at one of those water vending machines. A woman in her 30's, smiled at me and remarked- "oh you know how to save money, you go to the water machine". FWIW she wasn't attractive, but I was travelling alone and, I guess, happy to talk to someone. Brief conversation ensued, she asked me to sit down (as they always do at Sovanna mall), she asks me where I am from and wait for it- surprise surprise her cousin is moving to Wellington to work as a nurse, perhaps i would like to come to lunch so I could tell her about my country. Naively I said sure and we arranged to meet at the same spot the next morning.
Looking back on it I guess coming from small town N.Z made me an easy mark as there (particularly in the South Island which is friendlier) its entirely possible that you might meet a stranger in a supermarket car-park say and be invited back for a bbq and beers. (not saying this happens all the time but it definitely happens).
My motivation at the point certainly wasn't greed, nor was it sex (as I said she wasn't attractive- even to a New Zealander). I guess the motivation was just to meet some "real" Thai people.
Next morning I told a guy at the guest house what I was doing and joked that I hoped I wasn't going to wake up in an ice-filled bathtub with a kidney missing.
As planned, we met, taking a bus for about an hour and then a short taxi ride to an apartment building. Went up the lift, my "friend' knocked on a door and a man appeared. "
"Uncle Leo" the woman said "where is my cousin? -I brought my friend to meet her".
Uncle Leo shook his head gravely and said "your Aunty is sick in the hospital, and your cousin has gone there with her".
I was then introduced and invited inside. At this point alarm bells were ringing a little. This apartment where they were supposed to be living was like a cheap hotel unit and there was nothing, no posters on the wall, no clothes etc to make you think people actually lived there.
"Do you drink Pepsi?" Uncle Leo asked. I don't drink soft drinks but accepted and noticed that as I took the screw top off there was no "pst/pop" at all. Feeling a little paranoid at this point I took a small sip.
I have often wondered about this aspect, probably the Pepsi was fine but I wonder if something like ground xanax could be dissolved in cola, if it can it would suit the purpose quite well, not to put the mark to sleep but perhaps to make him feel more at ease.
After a minutes conversation- the usual stuff- where was I from, what did I do for a job the pitch started.
"I have worked on the black-jack tables in a Casino for 23 years" said Uncle Leo, "and I need a partner- I will fix it so you win and then we will split the proceeds....and of course you will need some capital- so I will stake you $5000 (pretty sure he talked in $ rather than baht)
Of course now I knew what was going on (nice one Einstein I hear you say). I recalled a notice in a guesthouse in K.L I had stayed at the year before warning of a card scam, and also knew that Thailand didn't have casinos.
"Oh, I don't play cards" I said.
"This game is very simple" said uncle Leo, and with that he grabbed a small table, shifted it next to the bed, put a tablecloth on it and started to shuffle a deck of cards.
"Just example he said- I show you", and he dealt the cards, with me sitting on the bed next to the woman and him sitting opposite.
So we played cards, and even though I tried to look like a dopey cunt (which comes fairly naturally) he made it so that I kept winning- to whoops and exclamations of "you very lucky man" from my "friend".
Obviously, I just wanted out of there at this point but it wasn't like I was just gonna bolt for the door.
Eventually I said, "you know Leo, I've seen a lot of movies about casinos, and they have so many cameras. Your bosses will see me and know that I'm not a casino kind of guy..."
Which gave them their "out",they knew that i knew.
"Yes, they will see in your eyes" said the woman.
And that was pretty much it, I shook hands with Leo and the woman said she was going to visit her sister in the hospital and would walk me to the bus stop.
I imagine, as per the formula, some friends were going to "randomly" arrive, I would win for a bit, the stakes would be raised and then I would lose big, and be marched to an ATM.
I think I was lucky that I got the non-violent scammers, there are probably some, that once they have a target will take by force if they can't by gambling.

It didn’t happen in Cambodia and people aren’t imprisoned for seeing or hearing crimes anywayDuncan wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2019 1:53 pmbob.fortin wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2019 1:35 pmPolice? I’ve lived my life for almost seventy years. You should live yours instead of anonymously judging other people you have never met.
