First UK University Opens in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

DMU becomes first UK university to open campus in Cambodia
De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) has become the first UK university to open a campus in Cambodia.

For the first time, local and international students will be able to study and earn a UK degree at a British university campus, located in the country’s capital, Phnom Penh.

The institution will be run by DMU, in partnership with global education provider Ed Peritus, and initially offer students a number of DMU courses in business, finance and IT.

I can see a year studying abroad for UK students being a tempting option. Many Universities offer these already.

Leicester is a bit of a dump so a year in PP might be a very tempting option. That would bring in £9k per year in fees (which is probably more than they could get locally), and the student's living costs would plummet with booze and drugs much cheaper here.

Might be a nice opportunity for someone to set up a student's accommodation and settlement agency :chin:

I looked into it and it's $10,000 a year to study, for local students. About the same as CamEd or AUPP.

And I suspect a lot cheaper than going to Leicester and paying international student rates plus all the extra living costs of being in the UK, plus flights to and from home etc. They might be onto a winner here.

Am surprised to see that the top Indian university falls in the 201-250 bracket. Especially considering the number of Indians heading American corporations. India must be doing something right with its educational system. Just to name a few:
- Sundar Pichai - Google/Alphabet
- Satya Nadella - Microsoft
- Shantanu Narayen - Adobe
- Arvind Krishna - IBM
- Ajay Banga - World Bank
- Sanjay Mehrotra - Micron Technology

I can't be arsed to Google the rest, but the first 3 did all the important stuff in USA USA.

Prestigious university name gets the interview, aka the chance to land a job. Sometime the alumni network gets job leads as well.

In highly competitive job fields, it could make the difference between foot in the door and no chance. And is worth the price.

But… depends on the field and the school.

Wants to work for NASA? Go to Caltech and work at Jet Propulsion Laboratories for example.
