Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. First refugees arrive today, but IOM hasn't been informed?

Post by Anchor Moy »

Govt spokesman says the refugees arrive today, but the IOM who are supposed to be in charge of housing them hasn't been informed, according to this article in the PPP. Great planning from Cambodia and Australia. Oh, TIC I suppose ? But the Aussies don't seem to be doing great in the communication stakes either.

The first group of refugees from Nauru to accept resettlement in Cambodia under a controversial agreement signed with Australia last year is expected to arrive tomorrow, according to a government spokesman.

Interior Ministry spokesman Khieu Sopheak said “if there is no change in plan”, the refugees - one from Myanmar and three from Iran - will arrive in Cambodia tomorrow morning, via a Malaysia Airlines flight.

“To my knowledge, I think that it’s tomorrow morning,” he said.

The four refugees who had previously been held on the Pacific island of Nauru were flown secretly to Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory in early May and have been housed at an immigration facility near the airport ever since.

When they arrive, the refugees will be housed in villa-style accommodation, organised by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

They will also receive “intensive Khmer language and cultural and social orientation”, as well as “education services, health services, [and] employment services”, the IOM said in a statement earlier this month.

An IOM spokesman yesterday said the organisation had “not been told of any arrival date”.

More details - Aussie expats, don't be jealous. Just ask at the embassy if they have a spare 1000m sq. for rent, or in exchange for housework. :stir:

They will spend about six months in Phnom Penh, learning the Khmer language and other skills, Interior Ministry spokesman Khieu Sopheak said Wednesday.

The Australian government had offered $30 million in aid to Cambodia as part of the deal, and last week it announced an additional $12 million for the resettlement plan.

The Australian government has rented a 24,000-square-meter villa complex for them in the capital’s Chbar Ampov district, Khieu Sopheak said.

Kem Sarin, head of the refugee office at the Ministry of Interior, said last week a “pilot project” for refugees will help them adjust to life in Cambodia, including language, culture and traditions.

The move from the villa to the shack could be interesting, culture-shock supremo.

I'd bet they chose that area because there are a lot of Vietnamese there, and the likelihood of anti-foreigner riots is less.

Future moto and Tuk-Tuk drivers. America brought in a bunch of rag-heads and they eventually took over the cab companies and 7-11s using hand-out money from the US government. (That is the 7-11s not run by Chinese or Koreans.)

First four refugees from Australia arrived in Cambodia this morning via VIP terminal

Phnom Penh: Four refugees arrived in Cambodia this morning around 10:30 am on 4 June 2015 via VIP terminal of Phnom Penh international airport to settle down.

Then, they were brought by a van without escorting by the police into the city, however it wasn't specified where they have been taken to. This morning journalists were banned from accessing into the airport to take the picture. They only allowed to take the picture from the entrance.

The first settling down of 4 refugees took place after the government of Cambodia and the government of Australian signed on a bilateral MOU which allowed and supported Australian refugees to settle down in Cambodia.

Does anybody else find the term 'Australian refugees' to be annoyingly incorrect?
