First refugees arrive today, but IOM hasn't been informed?

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Seen a few things in my time and crazy decisions but this tops the lot.
$42 million and counting......
In a way, kudos to the Khmer Gov, if Aus Gov is handing out $42 million or anywhere near that number at the first stage, it's fill your [moto] boots time.

All this Aus taxpayers money being spent for what ?

Yet to hear if the 'refugees' will be provided identification papers or a passport.
If a State fails to provide any individual with a passport or travelling documents, this constitutes State imprisonment.
Look forward to hearing Cambodia's' argument on Aus Gov behalf to refuse identity, travelling and/or passport documents.

In 2002 ?

The issue is - this Aus / Khr arrangement is not being conducted under UNHCR Charter, regulations or status.

Shameful day for Australia, the poor bastards that died during WW1 and 2...for their government to do this? Adolf would be proud.

I hope a Chinese funeral parlour sets up outside Abbott's window..permanently, what a skunk.

Indeed.

They were transferred to a newly-built villa in a Phnom Penh suburb where they will live for months while receiving language and other training and benefits including $15,000, accommodation, income support and health insurance.
...
A Senate Estimates committee in Canberra has been told Operation Cambodia has so far cost an additional $15.5 million.

The benefits offered to the refugees will dry up in 12 months, leaving them to fend for themselves in a country where millions of people live in dire poverty and where education and health services are poor
.
$15,000 ? Health insurance for 12 months ? That's so big of them.

Be interesting to see what happens to them. How long will they be anonymous for do you think? What kind of reaction can they expect from the local population if their identities are known?

Interesting view and one I can understand. In the UK when asylum seekers are seen to be getting things that the locals aren't from the government, it breeds a lot of discontent. Mainly against the asylum seekers more than the government.

I suspect they will fit in easily unless someone makes a political fuss within Cambodian politics/ media. Has there been a lot of reporting in Khmer media? At least, until they start shipping too many over. Be a while before they are perceived as the new youn.

Little Salary, if the refugees were settled in Australia, they would probably have health care paid for the rest of their lives. This is why I think that 1 year of health insurance for these people is a very cheap deal for the Australian government to pay. Then after 1 year, the refugees will have nothing, just like most Cambodians.
So, you see, Australia is making a big saving on this.
(If you don't count the $50million or so that they paid to the Cambodian government.)
Don't worry, it's normal if you don't understand this; I don't understand this either. The whole affair defies logic. (It makes no sense.) %)

There is not as much reporting as in the English language media.
And when it is reported there is almost always a disclaimer paragraph:

"It should be remembered that in accordance with the agreement between Cambodia and Australia all the expenses of life and accommodation of the refugees will be covered by Australia and Cambodia will also earn revenue from the agreement"
