Finn Arto Rantonen Dies of Suspected Drug-Induced Heart Attack in Phnom Penh Guesthouse

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

A sad topic for my first post.
My partner - friends with his wife - is sure they returned to Cambodia from Finland only yesterday. They had been living there.

Not sure how that tallies with the 'running a guesthouse with his wife' angle, but again, she's adamant that's not the case. The provincial home was too small.

He never struck me as a serious druggie, but I didn't know him well.

RIP
Very sad, indeed.

It's not clear who exactly 'runs' it at the moment, but it's called 'Navy's Homestay' and his wife appears to be called Navy (although spelled a bit differently on her Facebook page), and the contact info for Navy's Homestay clearly appears to be his contact info, so take that as you will.

And if he just arrived back from Finland a couple days ago, as you say, that also matches up with the dates the Homestay announced they will be closed. You also say their provincial home is 'too small,' which also suggests that while they are back in Cambodia and presumably staying at their home there, it's too small for guests to stay there at the same time.

Very sad no matter what's going on.

Actually, looks like the Homestay likely closed for good back in June of 2018.

That's definitely his wife's name.

Perhaps the guesthouse wasn't so much a tangible place as an attempt to generate some extra income, offering tourists a chance to see 'the real Cambodia' by staying with his in-laws. The package offered suggests something along those lines.

Condolences to his friends and family.

Most meth is smoked, and there are of course Yama pills. I don't think the unfortunate man's weight is such an issue. Not everyone who dies as a result of narcotics has been on a downward spiral for years, it can all happen very quickly. If there weren't fat tweakers all those dealers in the US would go bust pretty quickly. 8-)

Here is a video of police removing the body of Arto Rantonen from Lakeside #10 Guesthouse in Phnom Penh, Cambodia after being found dead by his wife, who were both on holiday from Finland:

So he was not living in Cambodia and married to a Cambodian named Nary who he ran a business with named Nary Homestay after all?

Finnish culture and couples remind me of Cambodians

I think he was, just not at the time of his death. Looks like they closed it down months ago and moved to Finland.

How so? Finnish culture is pretty far away from Cambodia...

Maybe he was off the drugs in Finland and went back to his previous dosage when he returned to Cambodia and that killed him.
Actually a very plausible explanation. Getting anything more than paracetamol in Finland is hard and expensive.

My thoughts as well. Smack is much more likely than Meth tho, not many shoot up amphetamines.
