Farmer Nabbed Selling Weed to Tourists on Riverside

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

It doesn't say what became of the tourists, but they may have been asked to pay an on-the-spot fine for attempting to buy illegal drugs.

December 21, 2018
Farmer jailed two years for trafficking marijuana

Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday jailed a farmer for two years and fined him about $250 for possessing and trafficking more than one kilogram of marijuana in Daun Penh district in June.

Judge Chhoem Rithy identified him as Si Bunthy, 44, from Kampong Speu province.

“After the hearing and based on the confession and real evidence, the court finds him guilty,” he said. “Therefore, the court has decided to sentence him to two years in prison and fines him one million riels to put in the state’s budget.”

Judge Rithy said Mr Bunthy was arrested on June 8 in Chey Chumneas commune, where police seized eight packages of marijuana from him.

Second Lieutenant Ly Seng, a commune police officer, said that about 11am on June 8, Mr Bunthy was carrying the packages of marijuana while walking near the Royal Palace in the commune to sell to foreign tourists.

He said that when Mr Bunthy opened the packages of marijuana to show to the tourists, commune police nearby saw him and went to inspect the packages. They found the marijuana and arrested him.

“He was arrested red-handed while he attempted to sell the marijuana to a group of foreign tourists, who were users,” Sec Lt Seng said. “After his arrest, police seized eight packages of marijuana weighing more than 1.6 kilograms.”

I’ve got an old friend (he’s old not how long we’ve been friends) who’s a old school smoker. No tobacco.

He had some recently and he says it’s the best he’s had since being in Asia, some 20 years. But costs US prices.

He’s a happy bunny. (I think that’s the right term!)

Some tourists or newbies seem to have the idea that Cambodia has no laws against marijuana or that they are very laxist. On the contrary, you can even go to jail while you find the money to pay your fine. The authorities usually have more sensible things to do, but marijuana is illegal and they can decide to crack down at any time.

Use common sense and don't discuss any illegal habits you may have on a public forum.

Guess the farmer should have known you must need a permit to sell drugs on riverside, how else to explain the blatant, visible and aggressive drug pushing around the FCC area that goes on without punishment? It's almost as if someone with power turns a blind eye to this, which seems odd when you consider the fact that the FCC/Touk/Grand River/Royal Palace are awash with tourists and for many their impression will be one of a place where drugs and prostitution are offered as if normal, not good for a reputation. A hit squad of cops could go and arrest every single one of those dudes and lock them away for a few years with what they had with them. It would send out a message and maybe reduce the number of young tourists dying off fake cocaine. just my two cents for the day.

They say he was trying to sell 1600 grams per 8 bags. It sounds like the grower took it upon himself to cut out the middlemen. Imagine the look on the cops face when this provincial guy is seen displaying 200 gram bags to tourists in an area that normally sells 5-10 gram bags. It sounds like he was a bit too enthusiastic. Somebody must have said to him that tourists pay big dollar for the stuff and he eagerly cut the village spices and rushed to the highest traffic street. Poor bastard probably had no clue what he was doing.

Local dealers were probably pissed off that he was undercutting them on quantity and quality so demanded the competant authorities do the lawful and nab him.

I think you might be confusing the dozy cops who guide traffic with the highly skilled staff at the cybercrimes unit at the Ministry of the Interior. I know a couple and they are very smart, well-educated and multi-lingual. The Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith has also been known to show an interest in sites like this too.

This is a local dealer from FCC whose been there for years. He lives in his tuktuk according to the Daily article shared previously by angkorjohn. Poor bloke.

Times are changing. Many of those Riverside pizza joints have been raided and sporadically closed in the last 2-3 weeks, that I've noticed, anyway. That bar in Otres must have it's days numbered surely. I wouldn't want to be there when it's time comes up.
