fake cops busted

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

That's one of the reason why I would rather risk spending a night in jail than paying $100+ to a fake cop motherfucker. Can't really understand why people with a somehow concious mind pay these suckers as there's obviously two things that can happen to you: It's a real cop, he's going to take you to jail - you pay him when you arrived there and pay a few bucks more. Or you pay some stupid whatever who's approaching you on the street while wearing poorly copied equiment. Second option seems a bit stupid to me.

Just remind me, is it 2 days or 3 days you've been in the country now?

Cheers, :beer3:

That's by far no trick/behavior Cambodia owns exlusively. They pretty much do it in every 3rd world country and there's always enough scared or stupid people around to take part in this. You don't need to live in Cambodia for x year to know about stuff like that.

True, but it may be helpful in knowing how to deal with it.

Well, even if I wouldn't have been to Cambodia and various other development/3rd world countries before I'd just try to use common sense and the tiniest amount of research I am capable of:

3rd world -> poor people -> scamming/tricking -> possibility of fake police (fuck that, that just happened in Germany 2 years ago as well) -> just acting like I described before.

I don't really see why you should have been to Cambodia and/or another 3rd world country before to know such basic things. With a little logical thinking you should be alright and if not might deserve getting ripped of in some cases.

I know of two guys that followed your recommendation. They're still negotiating exactly how few bucks more. Maybe you can give them some tips in their thread. https://cambodiaexpatsonline.com/newswor ... t3914.html

I just hope that you're aware that we continue to see a pattern here.

People first arrive and say they'll never pay a bribe. You were just on another thread offering $50 to anyone who could give you the address of some local Cambodians that abuse their children.

What was your plan? Show up there alone and beat their assess to show them a lesson and walk out of there alive? I addressed your plan and tried to point out that while your heart might be in the right place, the plan itself was irrational and not in the least helpful to the situation.

Many people feel like this when they first arrive. They don't last here long.

Again, you're new and just can't fathom not fighting every single one of these things tooth and nail. Fair enough, but you either change that attitude a bit and manage to stay, or you don't and you're time in Cambodia will be very short.

And it's not like we're a bunch of pussies that get pushed around by crooked cops every day, we've just been here longer and see the bigger picture, just as you will sooner than later if you have any chance of staying.

Hopefully you'll be here long enough to see the same exact pattern with new arrivals yourself.

I'm far from a pushover, yet I've paid traffic fines without receipts, etc.

So again, not knocking you, but that kind of attitude won't help you stay for very long if you don't learn to take a little give a little. That's all.

I read this too and was so shocked that I almost spilled my cafe latte in iPadland.

GM is right. Excuse my French but badasses are the first ones to be put down. Don't be a hero. I've seen the biggest guys being knocked out by the smallest girls when they've been surrounded and would most likely be jumped to death if they defended themselves.

People don't play games around here. Don't start anything. You'll be in very very deep trouble. Watch your step. This jungle loves eating macho badasses.

Keep your head down in the Kingdom of Undiagnosed Mental Problems. PTSD is the national anthem. If you remind them of war they will give you war. Either change attitude or start practice ducking.

I'll sign what GM said with my 4 year experience. That's not very much though, if we're not convincing you we could easily round up another 40 years of experience in this thread in just a couple of posts. Please take this as constructive criticism and not some nonsense rambling that we make up to troll people. Cambodia is not a safe country for troublemakers.
