One dead, 27 collapse at factory in Dangkor

In the country’s latest mass fainting episode, one garment worker died after inhaling what authorities suspect to have been toxic fumes and 27 others collapsed at the Taiwanese-owned Accasette Garment factory in Phnom Penh’s Dangkor district on Wednesday.

Kraing Pongro Commune Police Chief Toeb Bunthen said yesterday that the deceased, Khat Samerl, 43, fainted shortly after lunch.

“According to the claim of some female workers, the victim fainted in the bathroom after she had worked for an hour after lunch time. The victim died on the way to the hospital in Por Sen Chey district,” he said, adding that 27 workers fainted upon receiving news of the death.

“According to the primary conclusion of local authorities, the deceased might have died of suffocation due to inhalation of chemical substances,” he said...

Garment factory worker’s death not from toxins

According to an investigation by the Labour Ministry’s fainting prevention committee, the death of a garment worker last week at the Taiwanese-owned Accasette Garment Factory was not caused by toxic chemical substances, as authorities had previously suspected, but was instead a case of cardiac arrest.

On May 31, garment worker Khat Samoel collapsed in the factory compound and died on the way to a nearby private clinic. The news of her death was blamed for causing more than 20 female workers to faint.

Head of the committee Pok Vanthat said yesterday that after investigations, the victim was found to have died from cardiac arrest and not from inhaling toxic substances.
“We have not found poisonous chemical substances in the clothes and the environment of the production building has been designed in accordance with technical standards,” he said.
According to Maosae, the factory has offered $1,000 in compensation to the victim’s family for funeral expenses.

Family of garment worker who died on the job waits for NSSF

Almost two weeks have passed since the death of a garment worker at the Taiwanese-owned Accasette Garment factory – a supplier of Dutch chain C&A – in Phnom Penh, but the National Social Security Fund has not offered her family compensation for her death, according to the victim’s husband.

The employee, Khat Samerl, 43, died on May 31 from what the Labour Ministry concluded was a case of cardiac arrest. News of her death allegedly caused more than 20 other workers to faint at the factory.

However, Samerl’s husband, Kong Logn, 47, said yesterday that neither authorities nor representatives from the company have informed him about why his wife, whom he claimed had no pre-existing illnesses, had passed away so suddenly. Logn, who heard about his late wife’s cause of death from other villagers who saw the news on television, added that the NSSF has not contacted him about the compensation.
