Facebook "Explore" - now testing in Cambodia

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I don't get it. never have, never will. if I want to share photos and shit I use email. if I want to read the news I go to news websites. The whole concept is just weird. Its not like everything in one place. Yoou still need your twitter (for what I don't know) and half a dozen other social manipulation websites. I rally don't need to be bothered with johnny's love life or Mary's tips on makeup oer being tagged at the pub when I am supposed to be at work

"At the heart of this change is Facebook’s attempt to be seen not as a news publisher, but as a neutral platform for interactions between friends. "

THIS!!!

OK question. how many of you have "FB friends " that you have never met??
I have maybe 15%, but at least i know of them or about them or something they do interests me...

As abruptly as FB started this experiment, they have now put an end to it. It didn't bother me that much personally, but you couldn't help wondering about why they chose six under-developed countries like Cambodia for their experimentation. Damage limitation in case it got out of hand ? Tinfoil time, or perhaps not.
IMO FB itself is Orwellian as a social concept - whatever form or feeds they use. There is a big difference between before and after FB that younger generations don't even see, because they have never known any different. Things like the idea of living a private life have totally changed.

Facebook ending News Feed experiment condemned as 'Orwellian'
Company announces end to trial in which professional news posts were removed from users’ feeds in six countries

Facebook will end an experiment that removed professional news posts from users’ News Feed in six countries, after months of criticism that the “downright Orwellian” move was increasing fake news and misinformation on the platform.

Adam Mosseri, Facebook’s head of News Feed, said in a blogpost announcing the change that the experiment had been motivated by “consistent feedback” that people wanted to see more from friends and family and less from media organizations and businesses on the News Feed. Starting in October, the company created a separate feed called “Explore” for so-called public posts in Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Bolivia, Cambodia, Serbia and Slovakia.

The backlash from news organizations in the affected countries was swift. “Facebook doesn’t think about consequences and has no interest at all in what is happening inside its test countries,” wrote the Slovakian journalist Filip Struhárik, one of the most prominent critics of the experiment. In December, Struhárik used CrowdTangle data to show that the experiment was hurting professional media more than fake news.

“You gave us our answer: people don’t want two separate feeds,” Mosseri wrote. “In surveys, people told us they were less satisfied with the posts they were seeing, and having two separate feeds didn’t actually help them connect more with friends and family.”

Mosseri also acknowledged the criticism that Facebook had acted high-handedly by completely changing the media landscape for six countries without warning or input from stakeholders, stating that the company would be “updating the way we evaluate where to test new products, and how we communicate about them”.

i only use Facebook, i dont use twitter, instagram etc etc, i hate the social media generation and i much prefer the older facebook, or even life before facebook, people have become far too obsessed and dependant on it,
on the other hand, it does make living on the complete opposite side of the world to my family easier i guess, i find it funny when i go back to England and me mam is like "you should see how big your nephews are" and im like "i know how big they are you lot put pictures on fucking facebook all the time"

i think i kind of understand their experiment though, my news feed is cluttered with so much shit, that ive got so used to just scrolling past and ignoring,
i much prefer it when it was just a social platform to interact with friends
