U.S. Ends Military Academy Progamme for Cambodia

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

A geopolitical discussion by suburban grocery store bookkeepers.
I despair. All this petty-fogging about pennies.
ffs - the issues at stake here are not about who pays the kid's school fees.

The decision to end the programme had been made after Cambodia had ended some areas of military cooperation, U.S. Embassy spokesman Arend Zwartjes said.

Cambodia's decision, not the Americans one.

"Following Cambodia's curtailment of cooperation in several areas of traditional bilateral military-military engagement, the country lost its eligibility for the U.S. military service academy program," Zwartjes told Voice of America (VoA).

The consequence of Cambodia's decision. If you breach one agreement, others become untenable.

Zwartjes said, however, Cambodian students currently enrolled in U.S. military academies would be permitted to complete their undergraduate programmes.

That was very decent of them. I suspect there are many in Washington who would have sent them all home forthwith.

"The United States has encouraged the Government of Cambodia to assist its students with remaining tuition costs," Zwartjes said.

The program will be a formal arrangement, setting out the rules and whatnot, including the payment of fees. Once the program has ended the money will stop. There is no longer any authority for one branch of government to transfer money to a college for foreign students.

The Americans told them that and Cambodia made it into a big deal, as if they were being wronged and now they ride to the rescue of the poor abandoned students by the big bad Americans. Nobody is buying that bullshit.

The issue here is Cambodia can't have it's cake and eat it too.

Now your putting some meat on the bones, Doc.
I don't disagree with any of that. - and yes, it was certainly Cambodia's choice.

My little 4 am expression of annoyance was just a reaction to what i saw as a focus on who would pay the (relatively) piddly fees.
To me, the bigger issue of the continued/further breakdown of the relationship between Cambodia and USA is far more important.

To be honest, i thought this kind of military training had completely stopped some time ago - along with the joint exercises. I definitely think in current climate it would be a bit silly to keep educating China's allies about US military tactics and thinking.

Those few Cambodians going over are probably like HE's son - too heavily invested in the current regime to ever be persuaded to be a US asset - neither as a full on spy, nor just as a "good friend".

Precisely. It is daft to educate people who are very likely to be on China's side in any future conflict. Hence my comment of the likelihood of there being many in Washington who would have sent them all home a long time ago.

The fees are a sideshow issue, but that is all Cambodia has to try and assume some kind of moral authority. The can't admit that that they breached other agreements that led to this situation.

You can't even get a woman here to admit she did something wrong, no matter how trivial. After a long and incoherent argument you will find that, when it comes to blame, all roads lead back to you.
