Driving/riding with earphones on

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Driving/riding with earphones on

Post by Spigzy »

Saw this on Post News earlier, and it just reminded me of the proliferation of people driving or riding whilst wearing earphones/ear buds.

I'm a bit old fashioned on this - any distraction including music - is a big no-no in the chaotic traffic of Cambodia. I'd agree with ear buds to prevent hearing damage if you're riding a motorbike at speed regularly (i.e. national roads), but in town, I just can't see why people do it. Everyone seems to be "I'm a great driver/rider, let's put on that sick beat". There's countless research papers on distracted driving/riding and the increase in accidents - even when using hands-free devices, etc. Yet people still do it.

I confess that when driving I'm not a big fan of music unless on a long drive, and on my motorbike the theme of a v-twin is just about as good music as I'm going to hear in the 20 minutes it takes to get from one side of town to the other.

Bring the hate & how you must listen to Sepultura's "Come back alive" to endure the daily commute, but for me it's a huge no-no in the Kingdom of Wonder.

Music in earplugs are not an issue as long as you go faster than the other commuters. Nobody cares about horns and honking, or any kind of noise except gunshots, as far as i drove in s.e asia. Drugs, drinking and fatigue are issues though, and are prevalent here.

I agree about other distractions, but music is special.

As i just saw and copy-pasted from some source, "many athletes use music in diverse ways in order to achieve a certain level of focus and concentration before a game or competition as well. Music enables them to put aside all other outside distractions in order to concentrate and envision what they want to accomplish during the game".

Yeah, i feel that way too.

But the eyes are working 200 % for sure.

Derrick or Max?
If you enjoy noise pollution and obnoxious driving practices, Phnom Penh is the place for you!

Are those JBL knock-offs direct copies that sound decent, or just have a JBL logo and sound like shit?
Do you think the parents of baby boomers whined so much when the boomers started changing society? And yet the whiney ones like to call young people "snowflakes." Hmm...

Derrick on that song from Roorback, but Max on Chaos AD was the one that got me into Sepultura. Wouldn’t identify myself as a typical metal fan, but there’s a time and place for every type of music, except (c)rap.

The one I have sounds great and it was $16. I did try all of the various types they had to find the best sounding one though.
Still here, in country...

Spigzy got to agree with you, I personally don't need any type of distractions when riding on these chaotic roads. As far has technology goes with the speakers it's like when you get to a certain age eyes and ears tend to not be has good to what they were of past, so that top quality may not make the overall difference, more so if your whizzing down the street with it attached to your moto.
Always "hope" but never "expect".
