Drivers Protest They are Paying for Pass-App Fare War

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. “I want the company to keep the original prices. We don’t want more than this. When the company lowers the price, a 10km journey will fetch only 8,000 riel – and 15 per cent is cut [as commission]."

“Let’s think – 8,000 riel to transport [a passenger] a distance of 10km? There is very little money left after paying for the gas,” Nary said.
I used TADA a few times but found the wait was longer so reverted back to, I would try again though as the app was good and maps loaded very fast

Edit: changed passapp %
Nary's math skills are not that great. 10km * 1000 riels is 10000 riels + the flagdown fee, which is 2000 riels. That is total 12000 riels - 15% commission so the driver is left 10200 riels.

Petrol price is 3500 riels/litre. And after some search on google it looks like Indian petrol rick shaw can do 35km per litre. So 10km trip the fuel cost is bit under 1000 riels. So the driver gets 9200 riels. According to google during friday this time rush hour from airport to city 10km trip takes about 40mins and lets say there is some extra driving to fetch the client so the whole trip takes 60ins. So driver hourly wage would be about 9000 riels. Thats not bad. Especially when you count that most Indian tuktuks in Phnom Penh use LPG and that is cheaper than petrol(?) and it consume less than petrol too. Of course there is lot of competition but then again, so does all fields have competition.

Operating cost is not only fuel, and utilization rate will not be 100% even without competition

Unless they take credit card Grab is simply more convenient. You can pre-select tip rates and it will be an exact % so you don't have to count hundreds and thousands losing face in the street. Just add your card, set the tip and ride like a baller.
Yeah, this is what got me to move from Passapp to Grab..set up a virtual debit card with ABA.

Tip rates? Where do you set those? I've just been stiffing all the drivers.

Grab seem predatory to me
Also their app wants permission to make calls
No thanks
I always round up to the next 1000, so sometimes I'm a cheap tipper and other times ok.

Grab is definitely predatory and trying to crush the competition to gain a monopoly though, that's pretty obvious.

As for permission for calls, it's so you can call your driver (not that they'll necessarily speak English)

After the trip, if you give 5 stars you can tip. Think it gives you three options, depending on the total journey cost

I have to admit when I paid cash I used to tip more

The most infuriating thing to me about GRab is this process.

I open the app.

I choose the type of vehicle I want.

I look up where I am and choose the ride's origin.

I look up where I am going and choose destination.

I click book.

The app then erases my vehicle, origin and destination choices and displays the face of the driver of the ride I took yesterday and asks if I want to rate my last ride.

Then I have to start over.

The problem is with your phone. Delete the apps cache and data from your phone. Go to add/remove apps, open the app, click on storage. Assuming you have Android
Still here, in country...

Biggest pain I encounter is trying booking a Grab from the southbound side of Monivong in order to travel south - and the job always taken by a driver who is further south than me, who then buggers around for 10 minutes, drives off in the wrong direction, cancels, or turns up on the wrong side but ofc can't do a U-turn because of the barricades, etc, etc. Happens every single time.

Comparing app rides in California and Cambodia ... Do the drivers lose every time ?

The Future for Uber and Lyft Drivers if Their Employers Win the California Fight? Listen to Their Cambodian Counterparts.
Gig workers the world over face false arguments about app-based business models providing “flexibility” and “independence.”

The fight over so-called “gig” work has come to a head in California. Lyft has even threatened to suspend all operations in the state. Why would the company even think of pulling out of such a lucrative market? This particular showdown is about what we consider employment, and it has global implications for the future of work.

The fight started in 2018, when California’s highest court had the audacity to suggest that Lyft, Uber, and other platform companies abide by the nation’s employment laws. The companies refused to comply.
