A young man reported to be the son of a wealthy Phnom Penh doctor was still being detained by military police yesterday evening after he angered the force’s deputy commander, Non Sokha, on Friday in a protracted road rage incident around Central Market.

Me Phea, identified by local media reports as the son of medical doctor Mana Chan, was arrested at about 6:30pm on Friday after attempting to drive his car into Sokha following a row over a near-accident, according to National Military Police spokesman Eng Hy...

In a video clip with 200,000 views that was posted on Facebook on Friday, Chan, the detained man’s father, appeared to threaten suicide if his son was indeed prosecuted over Friday’s incident, saying he wanted to be punished in his stead.

“See you in the next life, my beloved son. This was your dad’s mistake, because I did not educate you well,” he said. “I have gone around to apologise to them to punish me because my son was wrong. RIP.”

Officer Arrested for Road Rage
A junior military officer at the Defense Ministry involved in a road rage incident on Friday evening with a three-star general near Phnom Penh’s Central Market is due to face further questioning by prosecutors at the municipal court today after he allegedly tried to run down Lieutenant General Noan Sokha.

He said Lt. Gen. Sokha’s official complaint accused Mr. Sorphea of crashing his car, with his girlfriend and a male friend, into the back of his car within sight of the Central Market, causing slight damage.

After he had left his car to inspect the damage, Gen. Sokha said Mr. Sorphea abused him and threatened physical harm.

“And when the general was walking to stand at the road corner nearby [to call police], Chan Sorphea drove his car to hit the general, but it was lucky that the general managed to avoid being hit,” he said.

“After failing to hit the general, he drove his car around the road surrounding the Central Market three times and then drove away,” he said, adding that Mr. Sorphea was promptly arrested by military police units Lt. Gen. Sokha had summoned...

After 23-year-old Defense Ministry official Chan Sorphea’s arrest on Friday night for crashing into deputy national police chief Lieutenant General Noan Sokha’s car, and then attempting to run him over before driving away, he was charged with drug use by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court and transferred to a rehabilitation center.

Kong Vuthy, a municipal military police officer, said Mr. Sorphea had been charged under article 45 of the Law on Drug Control and faces up to six months in detention and a fine of up to one million riel (about $250) after a urine sample taken after the incident tested positive for drugs...
