Phnom Penh: a car painter decided to jump off Steng Mean Chay overpass, as he felt despair. His parents left him behind with two younger sister and brother. Recently his two young siblings are living in orphanage in kandal province (his hometown). This incident occurred around 1:30 am on 8 April 2015 in Beoung Salang, Toul Kork district.

He had been seen about the jump off the bridge, so people there had intervened and saved him on time. Otherwise he would have died.

The boy who decided to jump off the Steng Mean Chay bridge names Ram Socheat, 19 years old. He is a car painter living in Beoung Trabek. He said, “he has two younger brother and sister. His younger sister is 11 years old and his brother is 6 months old. His mother just left him and his brother and sister to live with her boyfriend about 2 month ago and his father went to work in Thailand 3 years or so, but he has never come back home”. As, it was really hard for him to look after and feed the two young brother and sister, he decided to send them to stay in an orphanage in Kandal province.

He continued, “he was feeling upset. Moreover he has to be responsible for his two brother and sister. He is hopeless as he has no parents around. So, he decided to come to Phnom Penh to work as car painter. From day by day, he was feeling down an down. Therefore, he decided to commit suicide”.

Circumstances that are a burden for all the children. Financial and emotional ones for everyone.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

What a poor boy. Too much responsibilities and pressures for him. What a mother she is.

I gather he didn't actually jump in the end?

If we were to look behind the cause, we would probably find the mother also going through rough times, wether it be emotional, financial or other. I have always believed that kids growing up need a home. Somewhere that gives them security, where there is food, water, friends and family and a bed. With many Cambodians being evicted off land and losing what shelter they had, this story of families being broken up is just another case of how some kids have lost everything including hope for the future.
So sad.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

To be honest, my family is also not really rich. We had been struggling with a lot of hard times too. Just like other families, yes we did had domestic violence, whenever my dad was drunk. However, my mom would never give up. she worked so hard to put food on the table on daily basis and sent me and four of my siblings to school. However, different people is different. I shouldn't use my mom's case to compare with other people. Anyway, i am speaking in general, many Cambodian moms will never leave their children no matter how hard or how bad the condition they are facing.

A very sad case indeed.

I hate to think what might have happened to the father in Thailand. Construction accident, fishing boat dangers, police corruption, etc.

The poor kids.

Perhaps his father might already died in Thailand.

That's rough indeed. Big age gap between the children. One needs a lot of mental discipline to get out of a situation like that. The circumstances thrust upon people can be overwhelming at times. Whenever I think I'm having a bad day or stressed out, I remind myself that it could always be worse. Hopefully he pulls through and figures out a way to take care of himself and his two siblings.
