Woman dies in gas tank explosion in Banteay Meanchey

A noodle vendor was killed on Monday night in a gas explosion while two others sustained critical injuries after a speeding car smashed into a row of streetside gas vendors in Banteay Meanchey province’s Poipet city.

Poipet city police chief Colonel Thin Sindeth yesterday said that the traffic accident occurred at about 11pm on Monday when a speeding car first hit the noodle vendor’s motorbike, then another motorbike before crashing into a gas tank and bottles full of gas on the streetside.

“A 29-year-old woman identified as Ny Soda, a noodle vendor, died, and two men suffered serious injuries,” Col Sindeth said. “They are receiving medical treatment in a hospital.”

Col Sindeth said after the car smashed into the streetside gas vendors and the gas tank, a large explosion was ignited, followed by multiple smaller ones and a raging inferno.

The fire razed six streetside gas vendor stalls, along with six stalls being used to sell various goods. A motorcycle repair shop, two cars, and three motorcycles were also destroyed.

Col Sindeth noted that officers used 14 water tankers to bring the fire under control by 3am yesterday.
