SELBY DEAN FREEMAN, New Zealander, arrested in Cambodia on Malaysian drugs charges

Selby Dean FREEMAN was arrested yesterday afternoon, 24 August 2017, at his rented house in Chhbar Ampov district and taken to the Department of Non-immigrant Foreigner and Technology, according to Colonel In Song, chief of the Anti-Drug Department.
The 34 year old New Zealand national was arrested by Cambodian police at the behest of Malaysian Interpol for drug charges committed in Malaysia in June 2012. He is reported to have escaped from Malaysia at that time, and to have gone into hiding in Cambodia. However, according to a recent statement from Cambodian police, they have only been looking for Freeman for the last two years.

It is not entirely clear what charges are brought against Freeman, but he is described as being the ringleader of a drug-trafficking organisation in Malaysia. No drugs were found on the New Zealand fugitive during his arrest, and if he is not charged with any crime committed on Cambodian soil, then he will be handed over to Malaysian Interpol officers for questioning. Two passports were found in Freeman's possession, one New Zealand and one British, so he may have dual nationality.

The National Police social media page https://www.facebook.com/policekhcom/ confirms that Freeman fled Malaysia in 2012, and had been officially sought by Cambodian police for two years at the time of his arrest.
However, the passports seem to have been issued in January and Feburary 2017, for 10 years each, and the New Zealand passport appears to have been issued in Sydney.
This raises questions about where Selby Freeman has been living since he left Malaysia in 2012, how long he had actually been in Cambodia, and how was he able to renew his passports if he was on the Interpol watch list ?

Man Wanted By Interpol Caught In Cambodia
25 August 2017
A New Zealand man sought by Interpol for alleged drug trafficking in Malaysia has been arrested in Cambodia where he has been evading authorities for two years, an anti-drug police office said yesterday.

Selby Dean Freeman, 34, who also holds a British passport, was finally caught out when he applied to renew his Cambodian visa and officials realized that he was a wanted man.

Cambodian anti-drug police had sought Mr. Freeman for more than two years, said Ing Song, administration bureau chief at the Interior Ministry’s anti-drug department.
He was detained on Wednesday afternoon at the Interior Ministry’s general department of immigration by the request of Malaysian authorities and Interpol police, Mr. Song said.

Mr. Freeman was listed on Interpol’s “red notice” list of most wanted criminals for his suspected involvement in drug trafficking in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur in June 2012, according to Mr. Song. He managed to stay under the radar in Cambodia by living at guesthouses and apartments after he fled Malaysia, charged with a crime that could earn him life in prison in the predominantly Muslim nation...

Not so long ago in Malaysia it would have earned him the death penalty

I thought the death penalty was mandatory in Malaysia for drug trafficking?

Judging by the look in his eyes, death may still be mandatory for drug trafficking in Malaysia.

I just saw this guy’s name on the walls of two immigration booth cubicles. That’s not the first time I’ve seen names pop up after the person has been arrested in Cambodia. Maybe it means he’s blacklisted now.

Hmm. So, did he get locked up in Cambodia in 2017, and now on the run? WTF.
