Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Deadline Set for Right-handed Drivers

Deadline Set for Right-handed Drivers

On May 12, any driver whose steering wheels are installed on the right side of their vehicles will find themselves on the wrong side of the law unless they pay for a special registration and license plate, according to a Transport Ministry announcement Wednesday.

The move comes months after Prime Minister HE spoke at the inauguration of the Techno overpass in early January, declaring that a previous plan to require all owners of right-sided vehicles to convert their driver-seats to the left would no longer go into effect. Instead, drivers would have to pay import taxes on the vehicles and register the ownership and license plates, the Ministry of Transport’s announcement read.

“For the existing right-hand-drive vehicles of all kinds in the Kingdom of Cambodia, which receive special permission and pay the import taxes, [they] shall apply for ownership registration and their vehicle’s license plates at the capital and provincial department of transport and public works by May 12, 2016,” it said.

Prior to the prime minister’s speech, truck drivers had been protesting intermittently . . . .

there goes ASEAN out the door,
when we were to be able to freely drive from one country to the next.

My sentiments exactly......

I had thought about shipping my Landcruiser troop carrier across, definitely not worth it now (it may not of been viable initially anyway) ......... maybe better to pick something up there.... Was thinking I could drive over the border and visit my father from time to time....... maybe not so easy now....??

I would expect that RHD vehicles from Thailand and elsewhere will be allowed (to visit) without problems.

I am guessing that 'new' imports might be a problem then?

I hope so for now, made numerous trips to Cambodia driving in and one planned for this August
BUT Thailand has put forth a ruling that Cambodian tagged cars/vans motorcycles will NOT be allowed in ( the Chinese have fucked it for everyone)
hope it does not pass as if it does, Cambodia might stop allowing thai cars/motorcycles in

BTW there are ONLY 2 borders a thai registered car/motorcycle can get in
Koh Kong
Osmach

^^ Are they not going to allow only Cambodian vehicles, or ALL left hand drive vehicles?

According to the link below, ALL LHD vehicles would also include Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar.

I wonder if British vehicles can drive in EU and vice versa. (I have no idea).

they will allow Malaysian, laos, Singapore in , cause they have an agreement in place

If they didn't there would be TONS of pissed off bikers.

It might also mean the end of European cycles.cars on their round the world trip ;-(
