The Kep Provincial Court yesterday charged a fake monk and his driver with drug possession after their scheme to collect alms to buy drugs was uncovered.
Provincial police chief Ing Samol identified the suspects as Mey Nguon, 26, who posed as a monk, and Kin Pheakdey, 26.
Mr Samol said the pair were arrested on Wednesday. They were charged yesterday with drug possession and unauthorised use of monk robes.

Vong Heng, an officer with the provincial anti-drug unit, said the pair were in a traffic accident on Wednesday morning in Kep.
When police attended the scene, they asked the pair for ID cards and discovered that Mr Nguon was not an ordained monk.

Police found crystal methamphetamine in their car, he said.
“Mr Nguon was arrested after police discovered that he was a fake monk and suspected that he was a drug trafficker,” said Mr Heng.



“After his arrest, he was then sent along with his driver to the head of provincial Buddhist monks in Kep province and the chief of the provincial department of cults and religion to have his robes seized.” Mr Heng said the pair denied trafficking but admitted being drug users...
