Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Cops should test drugs for quality, cop says ...

Post by Anchor Moy »

:thumb: Good thinking. I mean how do you know that you busted someone for some really bad shit unless you test it (on) yourself ? (Or do Cambodia's policemen all have degrees in chemistry ? )
Not quite sure what this is really about, but it sounds like there are differences between the drug squads and the lab technicians.
Chito said he wants police to personally verify all test results “in order to avoid suspicion falling on the laboratories”.

“Otherwise,” he continued, “it could be that the laboratory reports that the drugs are of too poor quality and too low quantity to prosecute, or that the suspect deserves a lighter sentence. We need transparency from everyone.”

well lol, I predict an increase in heart attacks among the drug brigade.

Another thing here; did I understand correctly that if the drugs you are selling are bad quality, then you get a lighter sentence ? Bring on the ajax in that case.

That's interesting. It seems the labs are prone to a bit of bribery. What a shock in the KOW! I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't also worked out that they can sell them again if they say they contain no illicit ingredients.

I think it says that if the drugs aren't illegal, ie temple powder, then they can't prosecute you for them. Same in the West.
I would imagine after that has been verified, they just throw them in the bin.

But, why do the police want access to drug-tests ?
[quote] And while Chito implied that laboratory technicians could not be trusted, Meas Vyrith, secretary-general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs (NACD), the authority now responsible for testing, said yesterday evening that similar dangers lay in giving police officers access to test results.

“Drug test results are like a knife with five blades,” said Vyrith. “When we can maintain their confidentiality, there will be justice. However, if, for example, after [an officer] receives test results, they go to meet the perpetrator [and explain] that their sentence will be five to 10 years, they can use this to do business.

“This is a very big concern, that [police] will use the result to extort money from [suspects], therefore it must be kept secret.”[.../quote]
