Convictions upheld over 2014 grenade attack on family.

The Appeal Court yesterday upheld the convictions of four people, including a former commune chief, involved in a grenade attack in Phnom Penh’s Sen Sok district in 2014 that killed a young boy and left five others injured.

On October 9, 2014, real estate broker Sorn Sin, 58, was eating dinner with his family in Khmuonh commune when two men drove by on a motorbike and lobbed a grenade at them.

Mr. Sin’s 11-year-old son, Sin Dara, sustained extensive injuries and later died at Kantha Bopha hospital.

Appeal Court presiding judge Samrith Sophal upheld the decision of the Miniciple Court, which found that Phy Nop, the 47-year-old former chief of Prek Pnov district’s Kok Roka commune who was responsible for the attack, was sentenced to life in prison and ordered to pay 735 million riel (about $184,000) in compensation to the six victims.

Nuon Samrith, 29, who confessed to throwing the grenade, was also given a life sentence. Pov Bunthoeun, 35, and Eng Dalin, 29, were each given 30 years in prison...
