Convicted Cambodian terrorist escapes from hospital.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Using the oldest trick in the book, Som Ek, who had been in prison since 2009, got himself transferred to hospital, and subsequently escaped his guards.

A 55-year-old domestic “terrorist,” who was sentenced to more than 40 years behind bars for planting bombs around Phnom Penh in 2009, escaped from a hospital in the capital on Saturday night after he was sent there for treatment.

Som Ek, the alleged leader of the Tiger Head Movement, was accused of planting explosives in front of the Defense Ministry and near the TV3 television station. He was also accused of training and recruiting terrorists and had been imprisoned since January 2009.

He was also a soldier for the Defense Ministry from 1979 until 2003.

Nuth Savana, a spokesman for the general department of prisons, said Mr. Ek escaped from the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital on Saturday night after being sent there for treatment.

“This is a trick of the prisoner who always thinks about ways to escape from one day to the next,” he said. “We are seeking his arrest and the reason why he fled...

Wonder what could be "the reason why he fled" ? Not wanting to stay in jail until he dies sounds like a pretty normal reason to escape. If I remember he is already sentenced to at least 40 years, and he has other trials pending.

As for how ? Now that's a real mystery. :chin:

And since I didn't know about the Tiger Head Movement, I went to look it up, and according to Wiki, it consists (consisted) of about half a dozen members:
The Khmer National Unity Front (KNUF), also known as the Tiger Liberation Movement and Tiger Head Movement, is a Cambodia-based domestic terrorist group whose objective is to violently oust Vietnamese influence from within the Cambodian government.

KNUF Membership

The KNUF is based in Cambodia's Mondulkiri Province and is composed of six to nine armed criminals. Four alleged members were recently arrested and are awaiting trial:[2]

Som Ek (also known as Ti To[3]), KNUF founder and former Khmer People's National Liberation Front member. He is a dual Thai-Cambodian citizen.
Reach Samnang, former Deputy Police Chief for the Mondulkiri province
Lek Bunnhean
Phy Savong

Another KNUF member, Sok Kimsovat, was arrested in mid-2007 and is serving a prison sentence at the Prey Sar Prison.

This could also be posted under "Cambodia you make me laugh", because it's hilarious:
The jailed leader of the antigovernment Tiger Head Movement and mastermind of a failed 2009 plot to bomb the Defence Ministry escaped police custody on Saturday after his family fed drugged food to the guards supervising him while he was in hospital, officials said...

One of the guards was positioned at the foot of Ek’s bed and another outside the room, as per procedure, Yan said. Asked why the guards had eaten food offered by Ek’s family, he said they were hungry.

“It was raining and they could not buy food, therefore they ate the food,” he said. “In short, this was because of the carelessness of our officers.”

Convicted RCAF Terrorist Still at Large After Hospital Escape
by Khuon Narim and Ben Paviour | October 12, 2016

Authorities are still searching for Som Ek and his family after the convicted terrorist and former soldier escaped a hospital room by allegedly dosing prison guards with sleeping pills during a visit by relatives on Saturday.

“Experts are searching for his wife and relatives who visited him at the hospital for questioning,” said Pech Yon, chief of Phnom Penh’s PJ Prison...

On Thursday, 51-year-old Mr. Ek was rushed to Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital in Phnom Penh after prison authorities said he fainted in the bathroom. A family who briefly shared the room with Mr. Ek said he escaped on Saturday night after five visiting relatives served food and blew pipe smoke that put two guards and the other occupants to sleep...

Authorities have not yet determined what what was in the pipe...

Sounds like they had a "great escape" party- I wonder how much money exchanged hands to pull this stunt.

How about a wild guess:

The ''Tiger Head" movement is a creation of the secret police Dirty Tricks Department, like the Soviet secret police invented,
created and controlled "The Trust"
