Cambodia: polluted water leaves five dead,18 hospitalized
5/5/2018 12:50:15 PM
(MENAFN) A local police officer declared that five villagers have died as another 18 were rushed to hospitals in eastern Cambodia's Kratie province after consuming polluted water.

Deputy police chief of Kratie province,Om Phy confirmed that the incident took place at an indigenous people's village in Chitborey district since Thursday.

He added: "Two men and three women were confirmed dead on Friday and 18 others had been admitted to hospital after they reportedly drank water from a canal in the village,"

"It's just the start of rainy season, and there is rain these days, I suspect that rain water has flown insecticide from the farms into the canal,", according to the official.

Interesting take on it. Although it says they took the water from a canal, not a public well or something. Probably just runoff in this case. Locals apply pesticide with no knowledge of what they are doing. The more the better, to them. Enjoy consuming locally-grown fruits and veggies, folks!

The death toll has risen to 10. There is something very dangerous in the stream that the villagers were using for their water supply. It would be interesting to know if their animals were also affected.

Ten dead, nearly 100 others hospitalised after drinking contaminated water
6 May 2018
Contaminated water from a stream in Kratie province has been blamed in the deaths of 10 people, with nearly 100 others hospitalised, officials confirmed on Sunday.

Chhueng Sophea, deputy chief of staff at the Cheborey district police, said the death toll, which initially stood at eight on Sunday morning, had now risen to 10, and close to 100 others were receiving treatment.

Provincial Governor Var Thorn said on Sunday that the deaths, which began on Thursday, occurred after villagers from Kantuot commune drank contaminated water from a stream flowing from Mondulkiri.

The sickened villagers were sent to district and provincial referral hospitals, while those in serious condition were transferred to Phnom Penh to receive treatment, he said.

“Eighty-seven were admitted to hospitals earlier and now 10 others were sent to hospitals, too, so it’s nearly 100," he said. "It could not be controlled.”

Thorn said officials have concluded that the deaths were a result of contaminated water, but officials don’t yet know the specific poisonous substance.
“Medical experts and staff are working and have sent evidence [samples] to a lab in Phnom Penh for examination,” he said.

6 May 2018
- Ten Cambodian villagers have died and 120 others have been sickened after drinking water suspected to be contaminated with insecticide.

The dead and sickened villagers exhibited the same symptoms including breathing problems, dizziness, vomiting and chest pains, the head of the Kratie Provincial Health Department, Chhneang Sivutha, said.

He said villagers began getting sick on Thursday. Health authorities have collected water and food samples from the two villages and are awaiting laboratory results.

The deputy provincial police chief, Chhim Sokhim, suspected rainwater from nearby farms that use insecticide had come into contact with a stream where villagers collect water used for drinking and cooking.
