Maybe the answer is here ? Check on the state of the children and the animals - both drink water and should be sicker than adult humans if the water supply is in question. And neither drink rice wine.
This would be a good clue. :thumb:

Well I think it more likely they are covering up something else with the idea of rice wine. I know that children are given alcohol here, but, really??, all those 300+ men, women and children had drunk rice wine? Admittedly, I have very little experience of village life.

Some did have the contaminated wine and died, it happens every year, but someone (and I guess it's someone with good connections) has fucked up some food or drink out there poisoning much more people, and now tries to blame the water in stream with success so it seems. I mean, 173 mcg of chromium instead of 50 mcg allowed (in the USA 100 mcg is allowed....) in a liter is not going to kill you instantly unless you drink a 1000 liters at a time. But in that case the water itself is more lethal. I am pretty sure it's a major fuck up as well as a cover up.

Thirteen dead from drinking tainted water in Kratie
7 May 2018
The death toll of the villagers who have died of drinking tainted water in Kratie province’s Chetr Borei district rose to 13 and more than 200 people have been hospitalized, officials said.

Phon Phea, Kantuot commune police chief, said on Monday that so far 13 villagers have died and 214 sick people have received medical treatment at the provincial hospital.

“This morning, we sent about 30 more people to the hospital and we have still stayed in the villages to keep an eye on them and we banned them from drinking, using water and taking bath in Prek Ter canal,” Mr Phea said.

The Ministry of Health issued a statement on Monday, saying that its health team suspected the poisoning was caused by drinking rice wine because most of the deceased and sick people used to drink a lot of rice wine, but some cases were caused by using water from Prek Ter canal.

“The working group continues to follow up and investigate to find the real reason that causes health problem and death,” it said, adding the deceased were aged between 24 and 73 years old.

“The result of National Laboratory on rice wine shows that wine that the villagers drank contains a high level of methanol that causes the drinkers poison, but water testing has produced no result yet, and it will be released tomorrow,” the statement added.

I didn't see any mention of children, I didn't see any pictures of kids either. I've never seen children being encouraged to drink alcohol here, and if they were going to it wouldn't be rice wine which has a rather bitter taste. However, these are tribal people and I don't know their habits. Besides that, I find it difficult to believe that any native here would drink from that stream unless they had been locked up without a sip of water for days.
If this was somehow industrial or pesticide pollution in the water supply there would have been a gradual sickness as the toxins would be distilled. Heavy metals like mercury from mining or arsenic which occurs naturally take a long time to build up and show symptoms. I suspect the rice wine or something that was eaten at the wake.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

I saw pictures if children being treated and I thought I saw mention of it too. Despite any written mention, there's more than one image with children

If the water was in fact contaminated... where from was the cause?
Water quenches the thirst, alcohol releases the truth.
