Consumer Protection Officers Find Borax and Expired Products at Takeo Market
Cambodia News, Takeo: On Tuesday, October 13, 2020, officials from the General Consumer Protection, Competition and Anti-Fraud Department, with the cooperation of officials of the Takeo Provincial Department of Commerce, conducted a quality of food safety and inspection of food items in Ang Ta Som Market in Tram Kak District, Takeo Province.
To check the standards of products, the expert officer made a preliminary analysis on food samples, such as: bubble bean, cucumber, pickles, oils, sauces, noodles, drinks etc, to find banned chemicals that can affect people's health. At the same time, the professional officer also checked for non-compliance of the goods on the packaging.
As a result, officials found expired goods and some food containing banned chemicals, including:
1/ Soybean tofu containing 6 kg of the banned chemical borax
2/ 3 bottles of expired snail oil equal to 3 kg
Officers then recorded the confiscation and stored the items for later incineration according to the procedure. A total of 9 kg of products were confiscated.

Here's a different take on the inspection in the market in Takeo:

"Uh huh."
"Holy shit".

Right. And kids use it to make slime.clutchcargo wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 7:21 pm Borax is good for terminating ants and cockroaches right?
Surely, Borax is a wrong translation. I bought some at Home Top hardware a couple of years ago.

I used to spread it very month in the kitchen around some fish or meat. Next morning, all roaches dead. Can't find it anymore. Why would they ban it?Username Taken wrote: ↑Wed Oct 14, 2020 3:50 amRight. Not an incorrect translation... but is correct... borax has been added to fresh food in Cambodia for reasons unknown, the same as MSG... while MSG is supposedly a flavor enhancer, there is no benefit from borax except as a food preserver,/mold inhibitor. There is absolutely no reason to add borax to freshly made foods in restaurants and the likes but they were adding it anyway. Excess amount consumed can kill people. It was banned totally some years ago in Cambodia, but you can still find it here and there used in foods or even on the shelf for sale. https://www.cfs.gov.hk/english/multimed ... 31_01.htmlUsername Taken wrote: ↑Wed Oct 14, 2020 3:50 amRight. from the net: The EU has banned borax on claims of impacts on reproductive health, following studies on mice and rats at high (abnormally high) ingested doses. ... Salt, for example, is harmful, even lethal in high doses, yet we quite happily sprinkle it on to our cooking.

Re: Consumer Protection Officers Find Borax and Expired Products at Takeo Market
Borax contains the mineral Boron, which is an essential mineral for our bone health. However, your body only needs a very small dosage, not the quantities that they are maybe putting in the food. 1 Kg of Borax has enough Boron to last about 30 years of daily dosage, (which is maybe why health supplement manufacturers don't let on that it's as cheap as chips to buy). I take a sip of Borax in water every day to get my recommended daily dosage. My bag of Borax that I bought on Lazada will last a lifetime...
