City Hall Is Searching For Artists Who Drew A Picture Of A Woman On The Wall Of The White Building

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Couple days ago, Phnom Penh Post Weekend had posted an article about the street art in Phnom Penh which the author titled his article something like, Street artists’ project turns capital into city-wide gallery. However what the government responded to this masterpiece is very unexpected.

From high on the north wall of the White Building, a 10 metre-tall green and black portrait of Moeun Thary – a seamstress and resident of the building – looks down on Sothearos Boulevard.

The piece – by Californian painter Miles “El Mac” MacGregor – is one of a number of murals painted by internationally renowned artists in recent weeks as part of a project called Igloo Hong organised and funded by US artist and multimillionaire David Choe.

On a wall the next street over, Taiwanese-American artist James Jean painted a greyscale figure rowing down a river of noodles. In a nearby alley, Choe and Spanish artist Aryz splashed a stunning rainbow mash of geometric shapes and black scribbles. In another, US artist Esao painted a golden-crowned bull, patterns swirling on its hide.

“He just wanted to come out here and paint some murals,” MacGregor, who was the last of the six participating artists to leave Phnom Penh, said this week. “Phnom Penh isn’t known for its mural scene and seemed like a good place to make some art. There are a lot of commercial ‘mural festivals’ happening at the moment, and this was kind of a response to that, doing it independently.”

Post Weekend was unable to contact Choe for comment; however, in a post on his Instagram account, he said the Cambodia trip was the first undertaken as part of the Igloo Hong project, which was about supporting “the best artists in the world to allow them to create their best work for the world, no starving suffering artist bullshit”.

According to Vayofm.com, on 16 December 2015 the city hall of Phnom Penh had written an announcement on its facebook page saying recently there was a group of street artists drew a picture of a woman on the wall of the white building located in Tonle Basak commune, Chamkarmon district. The city hall had never given them the permission for them to draw the picture on the wall. The picture had surprised the locals in that area.

According to the source: The city hall had not given the permission to that group of street artists and the city hall just ordered the local authority to search for that group and make them hold accountable for that they did and they need to remove the picture and make the wall to become as it was before for the locals.

Interesting response by the locals as well as the government. I have heard that the residents of Lakeside are not too keen on the murals painted on their walls either. Also, an artist made a garden on an old tipping site and the locals came along and smashed it up. Make of it all what you will...
Perhaps our Cambodian posters would add their own perspective on this?

Same the world over. Some people like graffiti, and some do not. Most local councils I have come across are not pr graf.

I thought only murders and accidents 'caused a surprise' to citizens and competent authorities here.
It's a really nice piece, but yeah, they should have bought a box of anchors for the local sangkat beforehand.

Gone????? Why,,, I thought that was a wonderful painting. Cambodia will not be happy until it destroys itself and everything is gone. The longer I stay here the more,,,,

Time for me to go for a holiday in another country.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

The text reads: If he or she had put a little bit more of this one there would be no problem.
