Chinese woman tourist had her phone snatched and fell off Tuk Tuk resulting in broken leg

Phnom Penh: A Chinese woman tourist approximately 20 years old was seriously injured; she had one of her leg broken as she fell off Tuk Tuk while she was confronting with the snatchers when they were trying to snatch her Iphone 6 Plus. She was travelling on a Tuk Tuk with three of her friends, then there were two suspects riding on a motorbike and they snatched away her phone. This incident happened around 3:00 pm on 16 July 2015 at street 508 corner Monivong Boulevard in Phsar Doeum Thkov commune, Chamkarmon district.

According to the source from the scene, before the incident happened, the victim was travelling on a Tuk Tuk with three of her friends from the Killing Field to Royal Palace. Then when they reached the place where the incident happed, there were two young Cambodian men riding on black 125 Honda Dream. They drove near the Tuk Tuk and started to snatch the phone from her hand. As she was confronting with them, so she fell off the Tuk Tuk.

She was seriously injured after she fell off from the Tuk Tuk as she had her left leg broken. The suspects picked up the phone and drove away.
Later on, police arrived the place, but the suspect already fled and the victim was brought to Maliya hospital.

I literally just witnessed a phone snatch at the light south of Sihanouk (barang woman with two men). I raced towards them but unfortunately my engine revving alerted them and they took a right on Sihanouk, then another at the next small street (20+?). I yelled out "jao jao!" while pointing at them and bystanders threw stuff at them (rocks?), but they managed to turn right again (back at their starting point!) and they turned left on Norodom. I saw the girl and guys unknowingly walking back so abandoned pursuit and talked to them. Pisses me off that I didn't get them, should have followed them non-chalently and then rammed them once I was close enough or there was enough traffic. The number of jaos is staggering...

Easy money, little law enforcement, buy your way out, good, quick rewards, not many reasons not to do it for most.

I'm just surprised it's not way worse.

What is the best way for visitors to pre-empt/prevent these kinds of incidents?
It is a case of not bringing anything of value out into the open under any circumstances?
And is it so bad that you need to view everyone with suspicion particularly young guys riding together close to your tuk tuk vehicle?

Get a tuktuk with curtains or nets on the outside. Don't use your phone on the outside edge of a tuktuk or on a motorbike. Don't phone while walking on the road.
Leave your smartphone at home and get a crappy one for going out at night.
Don't carry a lot of cash or valuables when you go out drinking. And never flash wads of notes, anywhere. (This should be obvious, but...)

Just like any other big city really - apart from the tuktuks of course. Use your common sense. There are a lot of poor and desperate people about.

I know it gets the adrenaline going (at least it does with me) when I see a thief, and few things get under my skin more than low life thieves like such...but going after them isn't a smart thing to do. Many are just snatchers, but many are dangerous too and it's best just to steer clear of them for self preservation sake unless you're armed AND connected.

I'd hate to see you fall victim to some piece of shit low life thief because of a phone. Take care of yourself and be careful.
