Chinese Investments Boost Kampot Real Estate Market
24 November 2018
Phnom Penh, Cambodia News: There is a growing interest among Chinese investors for real estate in both Kampot and Kep, two small towns located in Cambodia's southern coastal region.
According to Keo Socheat, managing director of Blue Star’s Kampot Real Estate Real Estate Company, the Chinese investment projects in Kampot province are not the same as in Sihanoukville. However, with more Chinese investors flocking to Kampot, local authorities and Kampot real estate businesses are preparing services adapted to Chinese developers who wish to invest in the coastal province. Mr Socheat said that the property market is expanding and land prices are on the rise, with choice areas of land selling for hundreds of US dollars per square meter.
Mr. Sok Kenn, a real estate agent in Kampot province, also said that there are currently some big projects initiated by Chinese investors, such as the SEZ project in western part. “China’s first step in the development of the project is to buy land that was previously not used,” he said. “An official investment license from the Royal Government of Cambodia has been received “.

A recent controversy should focus attention on, rather than distract from, broader inroads Beijing is already making in the country.
By Prashanth Parameswaran
November 24, 2018
One of the major storylines around the recently-concluded round of ASEAN summitry in Singapore was a new round of international speculation over old fears about the establishment of a Chinese navy base in Cambodia. The concerns around a shadowy, decade-old port project that has proceeded in fits and starts, are not new, and the raising of the issue by U.S. diplomats directly with Cambodia have led to the typical semantic debates about what constitutes a “base” or “military use.” In reality, the recent controversy ought to focus attention on, rather than distract from, the broader issue that deserves attention, which is Beijing’s deepening military inroads into Cambodia in recent years and the concerns that this trend raises...
